HiI wondered if anyone knew of anything written – on the web, in books or magazines – about the tracking ships ‘Rose Knot Victor’ and ‘Coastal Sentry Quebec’? They are mentioned in Chris Kraft and Gene Kranz’s books. Out of curiosity I was wondering about their history, equipment, life on board, fate etc? Thanks for any pointers or info Paul, UK

There's some discussion about life onboard both ships in the JSC oral histories, from the interviews with the mission controllers who got shipped out there.Take a look at Ed Fendell's oral history: http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/history/oral_histories/FendellEI/FendellEI_10-19-00.pdf And Bob Heselmeyer's oral history, starting on page eight: http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/history/oral_histories/HeselmeyerRH/HeselmeyerRH_11-12-04.pdf |

(more) List Price: $44.95 * Hardcover: 200 pages * Publisher: Turner Publishing Company (KY) (July 2004) * Language: English * ISBN: 1563119854 Link amazon.com Chris. You might also be interested in a guide to Mercury tracking sites which includes a section on the Atlantic and Indian ocean ships. It has a wealth of technical detail, as well as some information about life on board. http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/mscorbaddon/MercuryTrackingSites.pdf |

I checked my copy of "Splashdown - NASA and the Navy" and it does not address the tracking ships at all. Also checked Catchpole's "Project Mercury" and it mentions the tracking ships sporadically, has one picture of two of them at dock, but no more. |

Probably out of print- but worth a search:RANGE RATS AT SEA by Dan Kovalchik 1995 Commonwealth Publications 9764 45th Ave. Edmonton, AB, Canada ISBN: 1-55197-128-3 It's a detailed memoir of life aboard the tracking ship VANGUARD- informative and hilarious.... very enjoyable read! |

You should also have a look through an older copy of Janes Fighting Ships; there is bound to be some general details of the vessels. |

The book "Range Rats at Sea" by Dan Kovalchik can be purchased thru his website http://www.rangerat.com/index.html click on this link "Rocket Ships" on his page to get info. on the Roseknot and Coastal Sentry Ships http://www.rangerat.com/rocketships.htm a good source for photos of range instrumentation ships is this url http://www.navsource.org/archives/09/53idx.htm I worked on the ETR tracking stations 1956-72 but i only worked on one of the small range ships in 1961, the "Golf" but found out I preferred land duty. Anyone interested in my experiences on tracking stations can find articles on my website; http://spacecovers.com/articles.htm [Edited by Joe Frasketi (October 10, 2006).] |
