Just found this audio of the Apollo 1 prime and back up crews from a press conference at the Manned Spacecraft Center.

Wow... very interesting press conference.

What surprised me most was the type of questions the press asked the crew.

One in particular was asked of Wally Schirra on his thoughts on not being assigned to the CSM/LM flight when his AS-205 mission was cancelled. He deferred the decision made on that to his boss... Deke Slayton.

The reporters really seemed to have a good understanding of the mission goals. They must have actually done some research. I don't think the questioning would be like that today.

This fills some gaps in the story of Apollo 1.

Great to hear their voices in a cordial atmosphere. I like Walt Cunningham's response when the reporter asked about his looking "hungry".

Was this held in December 1966?

From the context of things said and the fact Schirra, Cunningham, and Eisele were assigned as the backup crew by that time, I believe the press conference had to have been in Dec. 1966.

It must have been tough to be on a dead-end backup crew and have to face the media.

All times are CT (US)
