The first woman in Outer Space should have been Margaret Dumont.

Duke,
I'm not sure of the rules for this one. I'm guessing you have the time machine feature installed for this thread as Margaret Dumont would have been 73 in 1963 with a heart condition. I'll start with non-time machine candidates.

Amongst real candidates of the day Jerrie Cobb should have been the 8th Mercury astronaut. Her credentials were equal to the Mercury astros, and she passed the same tests, and with flying colors.

Amongst Soviet candidates, Tatiana Kuznetsova
a champion of Soviet parachuting competitions would have been a great choice. She would also set the record for the youngest person in space at 22. Marina Popovich (Pavel's wife) was a great aviatrix of the time but was disqualified because Pavel was already serving as a cosmonaut and she already had children. (The thought was raised about potential orphans of space disasters).

Amongst fantasy flights Jane Goodall with several chimps on a physiological test flight would have been fun !

In the actress catagory: June Lockhart (b. 1925) In addition to her Lost in Space sci-fi role she is an advocate of exploration and new technologies to this day. If she had been a flown spokesperson we would be walking on Mars by now. She is part of "the greatest generation" that somehow has the ability to inspire with warm feelings of Americana while retaining a certain level of practicality and common sense.

Would she have taken Groucho with her?

She would have been LMP and Groucho would have been CDR. What a great way to be intorduced into Society.

How about Mae West?
When she said, "Come up and see me sometime," then you'd know just where to go!
