Looking through some images, I notice that the forward hatch on LM-5 (A11) and LM-6 (A12) is pained / covered in two colours, split vertically down the centre of the hatch. Later LMs did not have this.

Does anyone know why there was a colour difference / what is was used for, and why it was removed?

Can you provide NASA image numbers so we can share the views and comment?

At a guess - without recourse to my files as I'm at work - it would be to do with the later science-orientated missions. The hatch may have been made 'lighter' to shave some extra pounds for the science kit ?

on LM-5

on LM-6.

But not here:

or here:

on LM-11 (A16).

I presume it was a change made to the J-series LMs, but I can't find anything that tells me what it was and why.

I was just looking at a couple of photos of Antares (Apollo 14) on the surface, and even though it wasn't a "J" mission, the hatch does not look like Eagle or Intrepid but does look like Orion.

yep, I tried there but no luck. I have sent to creator an e-mail, and hope that they might have the expertise to answer the question.

Thanks for your help!

Another guess is that maybe it was a ' test' to see which of the two schemes operated best on the first couple lander missions?
