i have just received a news breifing dated 10/16/70, concerning Lunar Surface Activities. in the press release it states about morale being low at the cape and also Al Shepard had expressed his concerns about low morale prior to the Flight of Apollo 14. Could some one tell me what the feeling of low morale was due to. Paul |

By the time of Apollo 14 (in fact the subject is discussed in press briefings on Apollo 7) many jobs were being cut as Apollo was winding down. Peak funding for Apollo was in the late 60's, and the "winding down" of Apollo displaced a large number of workers.Mark |

I suppose there might also have been a fear that after Apollo 13, failure on Apollo 14 would probably have killed Project Apollo outright. Of course, low morale among NASA workers might actually have brought about the very failure which they feared.(You could call that "self-fulfilling prophecy in waiting") Fortunately, Shepard, Mitchell, Roosa and the NASA workforce rose to the occasion! |

I got a GREAT reel-to-reel tape recording from NASA of "AlShep", as I nicknamed him because of the ALSEP lunar surface experiment.....doing a NASA Manned Spaceflight Awareness piece....."Apollo launch day is near."It is GREAT ! I "mixed" it with the Thunderbirds (???) instrumental that I loved......came out really good. Someday.....yeah right....I will have to dig it out of the archives and see if I can still play any of this stuff and maybe even put it on the web ! Don't....DON'T....watch this space !
