For the American Space Museum's first charity auction, Fred Haise was kind enough to donate a flown on Apollo 13 Lunar Bible from his personal collection with COA.

Now I see this one listed on eBay as flown Apollo 13 and 14.

Now I will be honest in saying I did not know about the Lunar Bibles before Fred's donation but the one listed on eBay is not even close to the one we sold.

So my question is, were the Lunar Bibles flown on Apollo 14 the same ones that did not make it to the lunar surface on Apollo 13 or is the another version of the lunar bible being sold on eBay?

Apollo 13 flew 512 lunar bibles to the moon. Of those, 300 were re-flown on Apollo 14 (100 of which were landed on the surface).

The "no. 715" that the seller identifies as a serialization is incorrect; they were all labeled as such (the other auction the seller cites as "serial #713" is typo; it was no. 715 too).

File that eBay lot as a nice try, but no fly. The expert on the Bible is Carol Mersch and she would say that this Bible is unflown.

The passage of time and the attention paid to the lunar bibles seems to have created a misconception that all microfilm bibles are lunar bibles, or that the microfilm bible was created for the purpose of being flown to the moon. There are many more microfilm bibles that did not fly and had no connection with the Apollo Prayer League.

I found out last year about the lunar bible and would love a flown one but the cost is beyond me.

After reading the book about the Apollo Prayer League, which was fascinating, I started to search eBay, Amazon and the internet to see if I could get an unflown one and after ages searching I found out that they made reproductions of the lunar bible which where given to US soldiers in Iraq and these could be bought online fairly cheap, so managed to get one for my collection of space related stuff.

Just to clarify, unflown examples of the National Cash Register Co. (NCR) microfilm bible are not reproductions of the lunar bibles; they are just other copies of the NCR bible.

The Apollo Prayer League used the NCR microfilm no. 715 bible, but as you note, they were distributed and used on Earth, too.

All times are CT (US)
