A few weeks ago I was able to buy a First Day Cover with the autograph of Yuri Gagarin for a cheap price. I know that there a many forgeries so I am not sure this one is the real thing... Opinions anyone?

Absolutely no chance it is authentic. If you can't get a refund, burn it.

Sorry.

I think it's a forgery.

That was my initial thought.

After studying for a while I have doubts now. It seemed shaky to me to the end of the signature...and considering the amount of really good forgeries on Gagarin- I would personally avoid this one. But it actually might be good in my opinion.

The Suriname cover is a fake in my opinion but the Austrian cachet cover mentioned later is good in my opinion.

I did not invent it! Vadim Moltchanov was my great friend. This is the story of autographs. If you think you have, then nobody takes you to your opinion as well.

Nobody is saying that you are the forger. This is the collector forum and I guess everyone has a right to give an opinion on the items he knows. The style of the autographs is very close to the forger's style mentioned above who has been in market for at least 15 years or so. If your friend didn't obtained the autographs in person then he more likely bought them from someone beleiving that the autographs were genuine.

Daniel, no one is accusing you of forging this item, nor your friend. Unfortunately, the aforementioned dealer had been turning out these Gagarins by the thousands fooling many collectors.

I am not an expert by any means, I do not even have a real one myself. I have been fooled by this style of forgery in the past, though I have not lost any money on them.

The late Vadim Molchanov from Tula had personal contacts with many cosmonauts and he was a frequent visitor of Star City. He died 20 years ago. There is no need to have any doubts about where he obtained his autographs.
