John Young no longer signs so we're looking to buy a good signature. What about this one together with Charlie Duke? Looks good...

They both look like genuine signatures to me. That's Duke saluting in the photo.

I saved the image and brought it in for a closeup. Looks good, a little fading on the Young, but clean.

There's room for Mattingly in the middle.

All in all, a nice example.

The photo is too small to say anything.

I too have saved the image and brought it in for a close-up (and I have a big screen) but it is pretty fuzzy, to me, to make a guess.

The signatures would look good but what if they are either printed or hand-drawn by a forger? We cannot see if they are shaky, for instance.

In light of that, I wouldn't pay that much if I couldn't see clear close-up pictures of each signature.
I prefer to lose a bargain rather than risking to lose my money.

Hope this helps!

Both signatures look fine; I'd have no problem pulling the trigger on this one if you're looking for this type signed item.

Did I miss an announcement from John Young? I didn't know he had stopped signing, I thought he signed for Astronaut Central occasionally.

I believe that sadly the state of John Young's health is such that he will never sign again.

While both signatures look good from an authenticity perspective, I don't see this as a good purchase at the current asking price, for a number of reasons:
  • It's a signed mat board, not a signed photo. Signed mat boards (usually) don't hold the same value as a signed photo.
  • The mat board is showing discoloration, which detracts from its visual appeal.
  • The signatures are showing fading, which is also a detraction.
  • It's a personalized piece, which also reduces the market value...unless your name happens to be Al.
While this item is not awful by any means, I personally think one can find better ways to invest $400 towards a Young signature.

In regard to the item, I have a hunch that if you can get a clear photo of it, there may be a Mattingly signature on there, although badly faded. I've seen a few crew-signed Apollo 16 items over the years with various degrees of fading, and Mattingly's always seems to be the worst one. Maybe he needed a new pen!

It just looks to me from the spacing of the other two signatures that the space between is clearly meant for the additional signature. Now it could be that it was intended for him to sign and he never got to it, but I haven't seen too many pieces like that. In cases where only Young and Duke were going to sign, the signatures are much closer together or randomly placed.

A completely faded Mattingly autograph adds nothing, in my opinion, to the value of the Young signature you are seeking, but it would be interesting to get a better look at the item. Maybe at some point he could complete it in that center space.

All times are CT (US)
