In case there are some people out there unfamiliar with Shepard's secretarial signatures eBay item 111241135261 is a classic example.

It comes with a nice colorful PSA/DNA COA complete with holographic foil and a not so nice matching sticker affixed to the front of the litho.

Sticking such a thing to the front of any vintage artifact should be a crime in my opinion, even if the article in question doesn't bear a genuine signature, but authenticating this obvious secretarial as a genuine Shepard signature is an equally shameful mistake.

To educate yourself so as to avoid similar errors, please see my guide on the AstroAutopens site.

I couldn't agree more - about it being a secretarial and about the PSA/DNA stickers. Not only is their service questionable but they might as well pour ink on an autograph as put a sticker on one (even if they get the authentification right). As if their sticker is on par with the item itself. Truly arrogant behavior that has totally ruined authentic items in my opinion and a disgrace to collecting. I get angry every time I see that.

I don't understand if they are going to put a sticker on it, why they don't place it on the back. I have passed on a couple of items that I wanted because of the sticker on it. GAI is no better in placing the sticker and worse at authenticating.

I saw this listing and was shocked cause I knew in two seconds it was secretarial, yet a paid authenticator passed it. Really sad... a big blemish to PSA/DNA.

I see it so much. I mean by saying this that people are dependent. I have worked in retail for many years and have customers that feel they are making a big purchase and want my opinion.

Now, I can't possibly know the ins and outs of 30,000 items, besides what one person swears is great, another will call crap. If I don't have the knowledge they seek, I refer them to do research by way of consumer reports and online product reviews. Most people look at me with disgust and don't want to hear that, but I'm being honest.

The point is - a lot of people would rather be lied to than do the research themselves. I have no pity for the person that buys that Shepard. Knowledge is the key, take the time and do the research! Know your hobby.
