Every once in a while over the past few years, some guy in Pennsylvania posts a very large scale shuttle "launch tower" in parts. He supposedly bought this from NASA.This could be a really nice start of a build, or could be an absolute waste of time and money! Any opinions on what it really is? Looks to me like he is missing a lot. |

I've been debating about bidding on this for months now, but at the end of the day I determined it would be a waste of money. For one, its to big to display anyplace except a museum. Second, its not complete. Third if you look at the photos carefully, you will see that its falling apart (the components). Fourth, the logistical move. I was interested in the "Beanie Cap arm" and the crew access arm for a small display, but even they are falling apart. Unless you have a shuttle model that size, time money and a place to put it, I say just pass and purchase one of the smaller 1/144 scale Launch Tower kits from the 1980s. |

Can I ask a dumb question and ask exactly what scale size this would fit into? He says it is 12 feet tall when assembled. |

Just a completely wild guess:Tower is 300' +/- without mast. Model is 12'. So we would be looking at 1/24 scale model? Again, this is only a guess. |

As mentioned before, I also have wondered about bidding on this thing in past eBay listings, I'd like to see it in person. Certainly one of a kind and BIG. The wife would NOT approve, hands down. |

If I lived closer I would buy this just to see what I could do with a few of the sections. When it was selling for $200 last time I almost placed a bid but in doing the math I was looking at a cost of about $1000 by the time I drove up rented a large moving truck and came home. So we stepped away.I agree, it looks in very rough shape. |

This 12' Shuttle LUT would be a good "last straw" for anyone who is looking for a divorce, and yet, I want it.Editor's note: Threads merged. |

WOW! There is no way I could purchase this model because I do not have anyplace that I could store it, build it, or display it. I hope that a museum acquires and displays this incredible scale model. |

I've been thinking about this: what about making two matching tower segments into glass topped end tables, and making the launch platform into a coffee table? That way you could sneak these past the spouse. |
