First time post, so go easy on me.

This is a photo book of my dad's that has been around for as long as I can remember, I'm over 40, and we were looking for information about it. I've searched the web a bit and have not found anything yet, but this site appears to have some activity so I'm hoping that someone here can tell me something about it.

  • No copyright page
  • No page numbers
  • 20 photos
  • Spine "Apollo"
  • Cover "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
Thanks!

That is an amazing item you have because it was owned by your father. Don't sell it - keep it in the family for future generations to enjoy.

It is likely a custom made book. He probably had a group of photos that he had acquired and then to preserve them for you and your heirs he had a bookbinder make them into the terrific item you now own.

It appears to be the type of album commonly used for wedding photos, etc. Your father took great care in customizing the lettering throughout the album, probably at significant expense. He must have meant this not only as way to express his appreciation for the moon landing achievement, but also as a remembrance for his family. So as much for himself, he made this for you.

There seems to be no binding as one would expect in a book but rather a binder that is used by magazines like Air&Space or Aviation Week to keep old issues.

Thanks for the responses. I really do appreciate the advice.

A couple of more details:

  • This was a limited production run of some sort. The copy I have says "Copy Number 123" (really).
  • There is a "thanks" on the last page from "Meisel Photochrome Corp" thanking NASA.
  • It is indeed kind of like a binder wedding album that was professionally done. Each of the photo pages are framed in metal and the corners are reinforced.
  • All of the pictures are prints from original negatives, so my dad says. The backs do have the type of watermark you would see on a developed photo, but I didn't look real close to see what it was.
I was just thinking that since it was numbered, there are at least 122 others out there and someone would know more about it.

I can post a few more pics with closer detail after work.

AND, not likely to ever sell it because it is so darn cool. By the way, Dad is still with us and quite with it, but I stopped believing everything he said back in high school. Thanks again!

I had a wedding photography business in the late 1970's, and this looks very much like an "Art Leather" product. They produced some of the nicer products back then, and would have been a great choice for a special limited edition piece rather than having it done in a traditional printing method.

Well, I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't read the first page very closely, which answers some of my questions.
Apollo... the vehicle that brought to realization man's dream of walking on another planet... is recorded in this album of original color photographs made by Meisel Photochrome Corporation, the nation's leading custom color laboratory. The brief descriptions of Apollo missions were provided by NASA historian Ivan Ertel, who lived and recorded the moon mission from Mercury through Apollo.

And this one's for you Dougin.

George, that does appear to be a description of the book, but the photos are not the same. Thanks for finding the reference.

There's a decent chance that the book is either one of a kind or there were only a few made.

Many times people create a serial number that starts above 1. (Like when you order new checks and the bank default start is check number 101). Since yours is number 123, I would not assume that there are 100+ out there. I'd bet on one or at most a handful. Beyond a handful it would have been cheaper to commission a custom book instead of the binder method chosen.

It's nice to have been right at least once on something this year (I was cutting it close though... LOL).

They did (and still do) make very nice products. I just checked and a leather out-cover (no pages) are over $300.
