Just out of curiosity... Some years ago (more than 30) I saw some movie props on sale at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. Included in the sale were some large scale damaged ship models from the film Tora Tora Tora and a spacesuit prop from the film "2001: A Space Odyssey."

The suit was in rough shape, blue gray color if I recall and the arm keypad and face mask were damaged. I seem to recall the price being $100, which at the time was a lot of money (though I am sure it would go much more now).

I am not sure what happened, if the suit was bought but I would be curious to know if anyone has ever seen one for sale since?

Dont recall the source of the rumor, but had heard/read somewhere that Kubrick ordered most 2001 props be destroyed... if true would make any items that escaped his decree pretty rare.

I heard he did as well. I saw on an FX model website some time ago that they found the frame of the circular space station out back at Shepperton Pinewood studios in London.

There were a few surviving items from what I heard. I just recall seeing this suit for sale with some other movie studio props.

The suit was in not good shape.

I've read in a couple of official-authorized 2001 related books that the spacesuits were mostly destroyed. I think one red helmet survived and one partial suit. I believe the helmet is on exhibit somewhere.

I'd try posting this question here.

You're pretty close there. I've handled the only existing 2001 suit, several years ago and it wasn't in great shape.

When they made, "2010," they had to build new suits using fan-made plans and stills from the original production. I've talked with the guy who made that suit (which I assume must exist somewhere today) and he told me what a pain it was to re-create it.

The LA County Museum of Art recently concluded an exhibitition on work of Stanley Kubrick, which included quite a few props / costumes from his films, including 2001.

Among the objects apparently on display were a helmet and a space suit, although I don't know if these were originals from 2001, or from 2010. There is a book on the exhibition (as well as an iPad app), and maybe one of those has more details.

The 2001 Spacesuit Restoration Project by Dennis Gilliam (cS: DG27) presents a thoroughly discussion of the suits that were used in the filming of the movie and what remains today.

All times are CT (US)
