I hope that some of you folks might have some information as to what these are.

I have several dozen of what appear to be images taped into large double-sided glass slides. Some have a blue NASA border with handwritten numbers, most have some sort of ID numbers handwritten onto their metal frames, and many appear to be from the "Surveyor" project, based on some of the content.

There are several shots of the moon, several of lunar vehicle/moon, lunar composite shots, and a few are comprised of text and technical specs/facts. Maybe ten or so are cracked.

Here are a few pictures (this is just a sampling of the types of pictures that are shown on these): 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9

These were found in a box in the basement of my mother's house on Long Island when she moved in (1993). I don't know the history of the house. They've been in her closet ever since. Any help or advice as to identification would be appreciated. Thanks.

They appear to be "lantern slides," which were apparently fairly common for presentations as late as the 1960s and early 1970s. I also remember reading about someone from a polar expedition -- perhaps one of Shackleton's men??? -- giving presentations using lantern slides.

I've run across lantern slides from Chrysler Corporation Space Division and some used by Sonny Morea whiling giving an LRV talk to the AIAA. These particular slides (some of them in poor condition) suspend a transparency between the pieces of glass, rather than actually developing the image on one of the pieces of glass.

They are a bear to scan (at least with my middle-of-the-road scanner), as the image being scanned is separated by the layer of glass comprising the slide.

I made them for my PI well into the 1980's. If you were doing slide presentations you couldn't beat the resolution. One of the glass halves was covered with photographic emulsion and was processed much like photographic paper.
