Just been looking at a cover in a UK auction and wondered if anyone would mind passing a rough opinion on the signatures. I've compared them with autopens and see no obvious matches, and the styles do seem to match legitimate covers sold at the major auctions.

Unfortunately I'm reliant on the auction house provided picture so it's not high detail, but a rough verdict would be appreciated.

They are not autopens.

Their size and placement however, raises questions.

Thanks Robert. I did think that they were very evenly spaced compared to most covers signed and raised suspicion that they may well have been "traced" or something similar. I've asked for a higher quality scan if possible to determine if the signatures flow or look copied.

Then again they may be okay in close up. Collins placement is a bit strange but I wonder how much they cared about aesthetic placement after signing so many items. I know I wouldn't.

Courtesy a collectSPACE reader comes confirmation that the signatures are pre-prints. Here is another one of the covers, "signed" exactly the same way, and because the scan is much better (click to enlarge) you can see they are printed.

Robert, as ever, the collectSPACE community has such a depth of knowledge, I am amazed how helpful everyone is in this minefield of a hobby.

Quite surprised an auction house couldn't spot a pre-print on an envelope! Their description specifically states signed in felt pen. As ever buyer beware.

Another one avoided thank goodness! Many thanks one and all — Mark

There are quite a lot of these preprinted envelopes in circulation and they fool collectors all the time - very tricky!

All times are CT (US)
