I would like opinions on this WSS Armstrong on eBay I am interested in. Item number 230916003907. Everything looks good to me on the signature. My main concern is how faded it is. Under the best conditions the signature will continue to fade. Any thoughts on how long the signature will be legible? |

I have heard anecdotally that the pen used in this signature will continue to fade, regardless of what you try to do to prevent it.For what it's worth, I had such a signature with the same infamous pen on a book plate that was as fresh 30 years after it was signed. I suspect however that once the signature has started to fade the loss sadly will continue with time. |

My worries about this particular WSS photo is that it looks to be permanently mounted to the mat board which devalues it greatly! |

I agree, if the fading is so evident now, it will most likely continue unless hidden away in a dark box, and you will only know if that retards it by taking a look at it every few years. A very low price, but you would be getting what you paid for (if that). It is unfortunately a prime example of improper display (probably exposed to strong or constant lighting) and improper framing materials used for so many years. It was most likely a precious memento proudly displayed for everyone one to see, but things like high UV blocking glass or plexiglass might not even have been enough to have protected it if displayed in sunlight. |

A good collecting rule of thumb is to avoid spending your money on items that are flawed...either badly damaged or faded. You'll never be completely happy with it and you will be looking to upgrade it from Day 1. Instead, save your money for a better item that won't need upgrading. |
