Topic: Selling my collection: piecemeal or together?

I have a decent size collection of Apollo and Skylab memorabilia that I was wondering what to do with. Lithographs, patches, stickers, Apollo 11 medallion in a hard plastic case, letter from Nixon to Petron. There is also some misc stuff. I need to cash in. Is it better to sell as collection or by the piece? Thank you in advance for any help. |

In my opinion, I would donate your collection to either a museum or university. |

Yeah, given the "highlights" mentioned, there is little to 'cash in' in my opinion... Donate it to a museum and take the tax deduction (you are gonna need it in the year ahead!)But, if you choose the "payola" route — if your collection "tells a story" of a space worker (which I doubt since you would have likely mentioned it), the collection as a whole would fetch a possible premium. Otherwise - just sell them off piece-meal to help other collectors fill gaps in their collections. Regardless, given the current economy and market, it'll take awhile and you are probably not gonna get what you want dollar-wise for your goods. Best of luck... |

It was my dad's stuff and he worked with NASA during those years. I have letters of appreciation to him and the "coin" was given to him also. I have a picture of a "part" that my dad put in space. I would trade everything to get my hands on that. I was wondering if like baseball cards, would it be worth traveling to some space shows and try to get an autograph or two on the lithos. By the way, everyone has super helpful and sincere on here, thank you. |

Can I ask which lithos you have? A lot are really common, some are rare and usually those ones can't be signed at an autograph show. |

Recommend you make sure you know what you have before you start selling. Some collectors will help you out (ok, most will), but there are some who may try to take advantage of you. Posting a list here would be a good start, as there are folks here who will be able to help. |

Capoetc. I partly agree with you, though the problem is people who "on sell" and not the genuine "collectors". |

Signed lithos depending on the signer as well as any thing flown. For example if you have a presentation to your father that has a flag that was flown on a mission can bring in some money, Apollo a lot more than shuttle. look forward to seeing your list. |

You mention patches too. Most patches, even vintage examples, are worth very little, but you never know, there may be some in your father's collection that are more rare.If you post a photo here you'll soon find out what you have. As ever, don't accept any offers to sell anything direct until you have a good idea of value from several sources. |

I apologize for the wording. I have some items that I need to sell at a fair price. Not being a "collector" per say, I will have to do my research before I let any of it go. That is why I'm here. Information. Then decide. |

The lithos you have listed are about $5-10 each, I would put them on ebay as a group starting at $10. Unfortunately they are all common. |

I agree with Ben regarding grouping of lithos, but my starting point would be $30. |

Before you put the lithos on eBay, post pics of the signed Roosa, Shepard to see if they are signed, autopen or printed. If original signatures, they could be worth quite a bit more. I assume they are autopen or printed but it does not hurt to check. |

One last thing, I have the Apollo 11 medallion that was given out to people and it is different than any that I've seen so far. Same coin (metal in it that went to moon) gold in color, but is in a hard plastic case with a black background. It is nicer than the ones that I've seen anywhere on eBay and other places, they are a simple white card with black letters. And also an Apollo 8 coin that was given out. I know pictures would help but I don't have any right now. Thank you in advance. |

Although no expert myself, I would wager that anything unique or one-of-a-kind in your collection will be where you'll find the greatest value.That letter from Nixon, for instance. Is it the original, and did the president sign it by hand (i.e. not an autopen)? |

If your intention is to re-sell them, then the answer is no. The prices currently being charged by the astronauts for autographs are often well above the secondary market values for their signatures. You would likely lose money in the process or, at best, perhaps break even. |
