Check this one out if you want a good chuckle for today. The sad part is it IS a tough to find item. I'm pretty sure this is one of the ones they used at Space Camp to represent the LES suits for the long duration mission simulations. The XL size is a bonus, as well. I've e-mailed the seller as to what it is and that it's not a real NASA suit (and that three grand is a stretch if even if was one, unless it was documented to a specific astronaut, but maybe not even then). The seller responded that it's a consignment item and "that's what the seller thinks it's worth"... I'm thinking the size would boost the value for what it really is and that $100 or so would be more thaa a fair offer given that... I'd really like to have this but there's no way the owner's going to come down that far to meet me on a value we could both agree on. |

Hey Lee, this may be one of the "ACES" they use at Camp for Shuttle crews, but I have my doubts. First off, it's a real flightsuit, probably too expensive for Camp to buy in bulk. Second, the Space Lab 2 patch isn't something Camp would have, or be inclined, to put on a suit.I reckon it's a suit someone put together before or after an SA session. It would look great at Camp, you'd turn a lot of heads, but $3,000 is outrageous. I'd price it at $100-175. As an aside, I have a brand new orange flightsuit with the official "Space Gear" Camp label, just like the current royal blue ones. Years ago, the museum docents used to wear these. I don't recall seeing them in recent years, so maybe they were reused as ACES suits. I'll try to ask one of my Camp buddies to check on that. --PK |

It's an Avirex suit, and I know for sure they made some of the early camp flightsuits (I have one with the pre-movie red patches). The academy patch, is, of course, not recent (but you knew that). I agree it could be one of the liftoff suits for the long duration mission at camp, and I too thought the other patch was an odd thing. I'd place the suit at the late 80s at the latest, as Avirex hasn't made stuff like this in a very long time.I feel sad for the owner, who thinks he really has something valuable, when in fact it's only worth something to a space camp collector (and a large one, too. The thing is a size 48, and way larger than most people who have gone through space camp). They'll never find a buyer for that. | |
