While in Hawaii I purchased a photograph (reprint) of Neil Armstrong getting off a Hawaiian Airlines plane. He is at the bottom of the stairs getting the traditional hug and kiss with a lei.

It looks to be from the mid to late 60's. I know it's not extremely valuable, but I have never seen this photo before and online searches reveal nothing.

Has anybody ever seen the photo and know the story behind it? Thanks.

Armstrong was in Hawaii as an astronaut capsule communicator assignment, before he flew in space, in March 1965 supporting the first manned Gemini spaceflight.

Also, didn't the First Man, along with first lunar landing crewmates Aldrin and Collins, make a short visit to Hawaii after their prime recovery ship (USS Hornet) returned from their Pacific splashdown impact area in July 1969?

Thanks for the info Ken.

If I can figure out how to post a photo here I can put up a picture (of the picture).

Editor's note: How to post images

Wow, he took off his glasses in preparation when he saw that one coming. What a priceless expression!

He does appear a bit sheepish. Like "don't show this to Janet."

As much as I love Hawaii, that is not the standard greeting anymore.

Good thing he got it when he could because there was noone like that waiting and puckered up when he stepped off the ladder of the LEM.

Just found out that Armstrong was again in Hawaii in late Jan. 1965 with fellow astronaut- buddies Collins, Schweickart, See, Bassett, Cunningham and Anders. All had arrived for a geological survey flight over the Hawaiian Islands. So that would be twice in 1965 (Jan. and March).
