Chris Featherston with Austin Auction Gallery has shared with collectSPACE a preview of three lots from their upcoming Nov. 11, 2012 Austin Icons Auction featuring items from the collection of the winningest coach in Texas Longhorns football history, Coach Darrell Royal and his wife Edith.

The three lots of possible interest to our readers are three flown flag presentations from Apollo 8, Apollo 12, and Apollo 16.

  • Framed American flag and copy of a photo stating: "This Flag Was Carried Aboard The First Manned Lunar Orbit Spacecraft, Apollo 8, December 21-27, 1968, Borman, Lovell, Anders", signed at lower left in faded but easily legible ink hand writing: "To Darrell, With high regards and best wishes for many more successful seasons, Frank Borman" signed lower right in faded hand writing "James Lovell" and "Bill Anders".

    Start Price: $5000
    PreSale Estimate: 10,000 - 15,000

  • Framed American flag and copy of a moon photo stating: "This Flag Sailed To The Moon on Yankee Clipper, The Second Manned Lunar Landing, Apollo 12, November 14-24, 1969, Conrad, Gordon, Bean" ink signed at lower left "To Darrell, Best Wishes, No. 1, (faded signatures on moon picture), "Alan Bean" and "Dick Gordon", signed to right of moon "Charles Conrad".

    Start Price: $5000
    PreSale Estimate: 10,000 - 15,000

  • Framed State of Texas flag and football drawing carried to the moon aboard U.S. space mission, Apollo 16, April 16-April 27, 1972 signed with penciled sentiment reading "To Darrell, A big salute from Descartes to a great friend. I could not quite come up with a Hook'um Horns sign, Charlie", (see photo with his right hand raised); signed: "John Young", "Ken Mattingly", "Charlie Duke".

    Start Price: $10,000
    PreSale Estimate: 15,000 - 25,000

A portion of the proceeds from this auction will be donated to the DKR Alzheimer's Fund.

In 2009 the collection was lent by the Royal's to the LBJ Presidential Library for an exhibit titled "To the Moon: The American Space Program in the 1960's". The Apollo 16 flag presentation was also on temporary loan to The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum.

More information and photographs are available by contacting the Austin Auction Gallery.

All times are CT (US)
