I recently purchased a NASA presentation with a flown patch. It was given to an individual who decided to sell. In displaying this in a frame do you or would you attempt to alter the presentation by changing the name or covering the dedication in some way?Thanks for your input. |

I kept mine as is. While I don't know much about who Matt is (other than that he worked on the Vehicle Integration Test Teat), it makes the presentation tell more of a story about its history. |

While I wouldn't do anything to permanently alter it, there's nothing wrong with putting something over the name that's removable. Or have a mat made that blocks out that part of the presentation. That way you only see the part you like and not the part that's inscribed to someone you've never heard of. I guess it all depends on how much seeing the name on it bothers you. Just don't do anything permanent to the actual presentation. |

If it's like the presentation I have, matting it to hide the inscription would also hide the crew signatures (and would also hide an important part of the background images). |

Hiding part of the presentation with a mat also introduces the issue of the covered part not fading at the same rate as the rest of the presentation. Even in UV-blocking acrylic, there will be some fading of the document. After 5 years of the presentation hanging on your wall, removing the mat might actually highlight the name, with an area that's brighter than the rest of the document. |

If people see it with the name, you can avoid the inevitable questions otherwise: - Was this awarded to you?

I think you can display some flown presentations in such a way you don't affect the original presentation. The two presentations (Skylab 1 flown American flag and Discovery flown Betsy Ross flag/Patch), both needed to have new matting, UV glass and one needed a new frame. I made sure that nothing was removed or disturbed that would affect the original integrity of the flown items. The Discovery flown presentation was in a little rough shape as each of the photos are mounted separately to the presentation board. So I had new matting produced that provided a window frame for each item and blocked out the name of the recipient. This process was also conducted on the Skylab flag.

Again though, a downside to this is that covered area will fade at a different rate than the uncovered area. You'd definitely want to avoid sunlight and other bright lights and get some good UV glass. It won't prevent that, but it'll slow it down. |

Everything I frame is to the best standing in protection that I can afford. At the moment these items are in storage and are only brought out for special occasions.As for faded areas, well the old mats were faded badly and yes you can see where the mats were when un-matted. Seeing how these are for myself, I don't think I really killed any value because its original provenance is still there an is just covered up. |
