This is my first post on this forum, so please accept my apologies if my post isn't in the correct place. I'm a newbie starting my collection of space related memorabilia. Looking for interesting stuff to add to my still very limited collection (I have only a few autographed books and photos), I decided to check what was available on eBay and I found this item.It is a cover signed by Jack Swigert, and although it says it includes a certificate of authenticity, I find the signature a bit unusual. As mentioned before, I am completely new at this, but I searched other posts in this forum regarding Swigert's signature and the few examples I found are a little different. It seems that there are two types of signatures, this one being the "flamboyant" one, as described by some other post. I was wondering if anyone would have additional examples of this kind of signature. Also, I have found this item selling on eBay for while, and I was wondering if anyone would venture a guess as to why this has been available for this long. Maybe it is just me, but I would assume that a cover signed by Jack Swigert would not last long. Is it the price? The signature?. Sorry if this was already discussed somewhere else in the forum, but I couldn't find any specific post regarding this item. Thanks! |

The signature looks great to me, and the cover is attractive. The seller is just way out of the park on the price. |

Welcome to collectSPACE.Know that "Certificates of Authenticity" are just pieces of paper. The only autographs I know to be true are the ones that are signed in front of me. As you live in Florida, why not buy a season pass to KSC and meet many different astronauts, most of which will sign an item each day for each visitor at the gift shop for free. You also get a neat lecture from them earlier in the day. |

The Swigert cover in question was sold through RR Auction in May 2011 where Scott Cornish approved it, and I believe I reviewed it for JSA at a later date. Obviously, it is authentic in my opinion. Swigert has a few different styles. The more "plain" style and the more flamboyant style with more of a right slant. Not really sure why or how he choose to sign differently, but both styles can be linked back to unquestionably authentic exemplars. The price is a bit optimistic, that's probably why it has been sitting there. I have found that many sellers will accept deep discounts through the make an offer feature. As long as the offer is not insulting, it doesn't hurt to try if you really like the item. |

Thank you very much for your responses and the warm welcome to the forum. Lots of good advices to learn from. quote: Originally posted by MarylandSpace: As you live in Florida, why not buy a season pass to KSC and meet many different astronauts, most of which will sign an item each day for each visitor at the gift shop for free. Thanks for the advice. That was my first step this year, and so far I have been lucky enough to get autographs from five different shuttle astronauts. Plus, I was able to get my copies of Moon Walker, Sky Walking and Riding Rockets signed. So this is indeed a great way to start. quote: Originally posted by Steve Zarelli: The price is a bit optimistic, that's probably why it has been sitting there. I though the price was probably the main reason why it has been sitting there, as there is another signed picture with a similar price that has been reposted a few times after unsuccessful attempts to sell it. In this regard, what would you guys think would be a fair price for an item like this? I saw another cover signed by the entire Apollo 13 crew sold for $575. It seems that with such a high asking price any offer would sound insulting. | |
