Can someone take a look at this Apollo 11 artifact for me and tell me if its genuine or not?The object encased in plastic appears to be a gold wire and a threaded nipple or bushing made of rubber or filament? I purchased this a couple of months ago on the internet. I'm not sure what exactly it is. What's the value of this piece and can anyone tell me the history of it? The plate on the front reads "Apollo 11 Presented To Kenneth Hackney." The person selling it says it is from an M.D. at Temple, Texas? Who knows him? On the back someone has written a little number '55' on it. Maybe this was one of 55 or more 'artifact displays'? Thanks for your help. See additional photos here.  |

There is a Kenneth Hackney, Jr., practicing medicine in College Station, Texas. He graduated from college in 1970, so this item could have been for his father. |

There was a similar plaque presented to the same person that sold about a month ago. These were recovered from an abandoned, auctioned storage locker. |

Update:This item is on eBay now as item #280869292348. The listing consists mostly of quotes from the two replies from cS members above, and uses the same photo as posted above (even the exact same size). I was a little concerned about a possible fake listing scam, but I just noticed that the original post above had a link to additional photos on a Belgian website, and the eBay seller is in Belgium. What raises concerns for me is that the seller's only other item is a hat purporting to be signed by the Apollo 11 crew... that shall we say doesn't look ideal to me. I mean, the hat's fine, it's the writing on it I'm worried about. |

The only thing that suggests to me (if the signature is dubious) is that the current owner didn't vet the authenticity of the hat before he/she purchased it.No reason to believe the ablator plug is not authentic Apollo (can't determine if it was from Columbia however). | |
