I came across an interesting piece today out and about. It is a commemorative ceramic stein highlighting the USS Hornet's recovery of the Apollo 12 capsule. It has the Prime Recovery Ship logo and year with the mission logo. I looked to find a similar stein online, but this one doesn't look like the normal mass produced commemorative ones. Has anyone seen anything like this before or know if this would have been something given to the Hornet's crew? Sorry for no picture, but if this is something worth possibly picking up, I'll definitely get a picture up tomorrow! Thanks for the thoughts! |

Perhaps it is actually a vintage item versus commemorative? Folks who participated in this thread can probably give you more information though I'm sure a picture would be helpful. All I can provide is an image of a vintage Hornet mug/stein for the recovery of Apollo 11. It belonged to Buzz Aldrin but I don't know if it was used on board while they waited out quarantine or whether it was given to him after/while departing the ship. |

I purchased a few commemorative mugs and steins from Space Photos in the 1970's. These though were obviously massed produced. |

David, thanks so much for the info! That's actually the stein I came across! Without Buzz Aldrin's name on it of course. This was the exact same one, however, it didn't have a name on it. It wasn't in pristine shape, but for something that old, it's not bad at all. They were asking $12 for it, which probably would mean about $10ish if I talk to the right little old lady. Is this a pretty good find? If it's something someone might want, I can always pick it up for a cS member! Take care all and thanks for the help. |

That's probably in-range given another example online. Maybe not too uncommon an item given these data points on prices. I have no idea how many were made but my understanding is they were sold on the ship (?). Hopefully no more turn up with 'Edwin Aldrin' on the side - I'd start to wonder about the background story for the example above! |

I recently paid about $20 for a perfect example. They are great. Buy it. |
