I can't tell you if this is a real signature... but, I can tell you the "red-flags" I don't like about it. These would lead me to believe it wasn't real.

I don't like how the end of the "L" in Neil loops up. Armstrong hardly ever did this. He almost always ends in a down stroke. Notice I said hardly ever. Very rarely, he does have this upward stroke.

Also, I don't like how much shorter the G extends downward at end of his signature, compared to how far down the N and A go. Also, I don't like the flatness at the bottom of his G going into his loop.

It is my belief that Armstrong's signature is easily forged, but it's the little things that stand out to show that its not real.

As I said, this could be his real signature, but the above issues would keep me from having any interest in buying it.

Well, it's currently at $177.50 with a few hours to go. As you say, there are a few issues with it. We shall see what transpires.

Sorry folks, but I can't see anything wrong with this signature.

If you go to the collectSPACE Armstrong reference samples you will see several matching this card very close, particularly the in the mail signatures from 1978 and 1990. Also several other show exactly the traits that are questioned here:

The "l" curls up quiet often in these 100 samples and the "g" not going down as far as the N or A as well.

Happy to hear other opinions, too.

Like I said Florian, I'm not saying it isn't real. I just wouldn't buy it. I believe there are better Armstrongs that come available where there is no doubt about the signature being his.

I agree with Florian and David. Although not the prettiest of examples, I really couldn't see anything wrong with it.

I think sometimes we collectors assume that the astronauts are not human and that variations won't occur. But we have to take into consideration the situation and circumstances that the signature was acquired in. For example, was there a push or a scrum of people asking for a signature at the time, so a more rushed feel would be delivered to the signature. To get a considered and perfect example of a certain signature is very difficult.

That said, I am only applying these comments to the signature in this particular discussion, of course there are ridiculous and laughable examples that appear and that is why it always a good idea to ask here and see what fellow cS'ers think.

All the best and as David said I think a bargain was had!!!

I personally have some concerns with the signature and would have avoided it. It could very well be real, but in my opinion there are issues with letter formation that I can't get 100% comfortable with...at least not to the point that I would lay down my money.

I totally agree with Mike's reasoning here. While it could be real, one must determine how comfortable they are with the signature and, if anything, error on the side of caution if there are any concerns (especially when hundreds or thousands of dollars are on the line).

Ultimately what is the better "deal"... a $330 signature you have leaves you with some nagging doubts or a $700 signature you can feel confident about? For me, the choice is easy.
