Hello! I was recommended by Steve Zarelli to post here because I'm selling a Neil Armstrong autograph that is signed on a black and white photo (size 10x8) of the Mercury Atlas rocket and both the signature and the photo is in good condition, especially considering it's age. I would even say that the autograph is in very good condition!

Another thing it has going for it, is the Apollo 11 inscription which is not common! It's personalized "To James," but that can easily be "mounted away."

I am 100% sure that this is a genuine autograph, because Steve Zarelli said that this looked fine and as many of you know, when it comes to space autographs he's one of the best! The former owner also paid to have a PSA/DNA quick opinion on this item and their response were "Likely genuine"!

I'm looking to get $875 for this and insured shipping with tracking number (from Sweden where I live) would cost an extra $20. I will sell to the first one who is interested and will only accept PayPal.

For that you will get:

  • the autographed rocket photo
  • an extra photo of Neil Armstrong (the one where he stands in his spacesuit in front of the moon), and
  • a transcript of the PSA/DNA quick opinion mail.
If you're interested in this autograph, please answer me in this thread.
Thanks! — Håkan

Update: This autograph is sold!

Unfortunately (and a bit surprisingly) there seems to be little interest in my genuine Neil Armstrong autograph...

Therefore I´m now open for (fair) offers! So if interested, let me know what you are willing to pay!

Håkan, I think the issue of interest is that the signature, while very nice looking is inscribed, signed on a black & white photo and a photo of a Mercury Atlas rocket.

Had the photo been of a X-15, Gemini 8 and of course Apollo 11, the interested would be greater.

A signature value isn't only determined in its authenticity, but in the material it was signed onto.

Adding to that, it would be very difficult to block out the inscription with matting. You would have to cut out half of the autograph itself to do so - so your market in that sense is limited to the name on the inscription.

If you had a slanted corner on the matte, the name would matte out nicely with no blocking of the signature. I've seen this before and it can look quite nice.

Regarding the item... let's not be too harsh. Scraps of lined paper sell for little less than $875... So I think the price is quite fair especially considering it has an Apollo 11 inscription, which is a significant plus.

Space specialist collectors may be a little more picky about the atlas rocket image, but to a generalist collector who just wants a Neil Armstrong autograph in his or her collection, this is a very fair price IMO.

Regrettably it's not selling as quickly as Don hoped, but I think it's just a matter of the right buyer not seeing it yet. Not that it is overpriced.

Just my 2 cents.

Ouch, it´s a tough crowd in here tonight...

No seriously, I appreciates your feedback but here is my thought about what you guys said.

garyd2831: I understand that the material this was signed on plays a part in the value, I have myself collected autographs for many year. But that's why I have priced this pretty low.

When looking around I see similar autographs (without the Apollo 11 connection) in way worse condition that are priced higher and sell for a lot more than I'm asking. And for myself as an autograph collector I would prefer an autograph in fine condition on a "little odd" item, compared to a badly faded one with Apollo 11 association.

But I understand if you space collectors don't agree with me on that one!

rgardner: Regarding that you have to "cut out half the autograph" to get this matted, that is just not true. As Steve said there is no trouble at all to get slanted corners to cover the inscription.

I have already talked to a "framing-company" about getting this matted in a 20x12 inch frame, with two opening (one with slated corners) for the autographed photo and the classic Neil Armstrong photo. This would cost me $40 and I think it would look pretty nice and add to the general value quite a bit!

Steve Zarelli: Your 2 cents are much appreciated...

Hopefully someone interested will come around or else I will keep this in my personal collection. That´s not a bad thing either!!!

Everyone says GarDner...

From what I can tell from the photograph even a cut corner would still cut a bit off the signature (not a lot, but still some), at least that is how it looks to my 20/20 vision eyes

The price however is still very fair, I will say that much!

(I quite like the gray scale photograph, it has character.)

Didn't know this was going to turn out to be a thread about matting...

My final words about that is that it will not be any trouble whatsoever matting this without any "damage" to the signature itself. According to the company that do framing and matting for me, so can I block out the "To James" inscription with a slanted corner and display "Best Wishes + Neil Armstrong" or block out all of the inscription so that "Neil Armstrong" is the only thing showing.

Either way, the autograph will be 100% visible!

Just wanted to point this out, so that any potential interested that sees this thread knows that is fully doable...

Since listing this a little over a week ago, I have received several offers of $400-$500 for this and according to me that's not nearly enough for a genuine Neil Armstrong autograph...

So instead of you making offers to me, I will sell this to the first one willing to pay me $825 (including insured shipping) and that's the lowest I will go. That's a very fair amount for this item, so no need for any offers below that sum.

And please, before you contact me about his item, think this through properly. Because if you say that you want to buy this, I would very much appreciate if you also are ready to complete the deal. I have had three persons contacted me and when we have been close to finalize the deal, they have withdrawn their offers because they either felt they didn't have the money or didn't have any room for this or their partner would be angry if they spent more money on autographs...

So think this through and if still interested, please contact me! Thanks!
