Any details on where you got it? I've never seen one marked like that as that's a bad place for the sticker as the headrest would rub it off. I can't recall ever seeing a real NASA bucket marked like this. |

I got this helmet a couple of years ago from a flight helmet collector out of Jacksonville, Florida. The helmet came with no papers and is a size medium. It's not worn so chances are slim this helmet was actually flown. There is not a scratch on this helmet. The NASA marking on the back is not a sticker it is airbrushed underneath the clear lacquer coating. It's my best guess this helemt comes from someones desk or memorabilia room down at NASA.This helmet is after all not military (most likely military grade) so it does not belong in my collection. It must go. |

I know NASA didn't use combat edge helmets in T-38's (though I can't speak for other types of aircraft which are operated at Dryden).I would guess that this was decorated by a private collector. What I find odd is the use of the NASA worm logo as opposed to the Meatball logo. |

The worm NASA logo is not so exceptional as decoration. Check this image: Of course the typical meatball in not uncommon. Notice the golden visor cover.  |

What is your asking price range? I know at the last heritage auction a flown blue angels helmet went for $400 approx. |

If a flown BA helmet brings $400 and you would use this questionable info as a reference then the NASA helmet I would like to sell would be worth no more than $200.I'm in the world of helmet collecting since 2004 and I have have over 50 helmets going through my hands. I know the prices by now. I would like to meet the person who got a flown original BA helmet for $400. The price for such a gem averages between $1200 and $2000. So it sounds highly unlikely the BA helmet was original (made by Gibson&Barnes/Flightsuits) if it went for this price. My selling price is $900, registered shipping anywhere in the world included. |

I have to agree, a flown Blue Angels helmet for $400 would be like nabbing a confirmed Armstrong autograph for a few hundred bucks... |

Hmmm, I'm no helmet expert, but when we were issued our flight helmets in the Air Force in 1988, we received a mix of the older twin-visor and new light-weight styles. We also were just transitioning to the newer oxygen masks. Your helmet is the new style with the old O2 mask - that, and the worm NASA would probably put it right smack in the late 80's. Also, we had a warm-pour over our heads to custom fit them; not long after (maybe early 1990's)they went to a sort of tough bubble wrap material and standard sizes. Which one is yours? Hope this helps a bit. |

The worm was only used in the 80's and early 90's. NASA officially transitioned from the Worm to the Meatball in the late 90's.Also do you know who made this helmet? Gibson & Barnes/Flight Suits Ltd. also (for the most part) manufactures NASA's helmets. I've seen astronauts sport a huge variety of different helmet styles though (some with the single snap on visor, most with the PRU-36 dual-visor housing. Then the colors and decorations vary greatly--some are even undecorated/unpainted, and some use reflective tape). As for oxygen masks, I've seen astronauts use a mix of the MBU-5/p, MBU-12/p, and MBU-20/p. There's some who still fly with the MBU-5/p, even if it is an old 'outdated' model. |

I don't see how reporting on the price realised for an item at auction is in any way questionable. Plain fact as far as I can see. We may all have an idea of what something is worth but no need to get defensive over someone pointing out the reults of an auction. The folks on this forum are extremely knowledgeable and helpful and any assistance from the forum members should be appreciated. |

The helmet I have for sale has the TPL liner, Thermo Plastic Liner or bubble wrap like line as described. |

No disrespect towards any member of this fine forum. It's only that I've been too long in the helmet collecting business to call $400US a correct and reasonable price for a flown Blue Angels helmet. I would call it a very nice bargain, a nice catch. $400 is more likely to be a correct price for a very good replica. Saying this I'm not implying the Blue Angels helmet is a replica. To make a statement with a minimum of credibility one must be able to see detailed pics of the helmet.I apologise when I would have crossed any lines in previous post. |

I agreed with you on that. I still contend that a Blue Angels flown helmet at 400 bucks is an utter steal, I still can't believe it went for that little.I'm not saying that one is fake (looks correct and I've seen a few real BA ones), I'm saying whoever won it practically walked got an insanely good deal, and that was a fluke. It sure isn't a standard anyone should use in determining helmet prices! |
