David, were these originally sold by the Franklin Mint based on their gold content?

Generally speaking, I have heard numismatists say that Franklin limited edition medals rarely hold their issue price value...

Robert, the original Franklin Mint Price were and still are more than double the silver and/or gold content.

The Young Astronaut in Space 7-coin set was produced by the U.S. Mint. Congress approved legislation authorizing the medals; the bill was signed by President Reagan on March 12, 1986, becoming Public Law 99-295.

For recent eBay prices see here.

Prices on eBay do not generally reflect the actual price people are willing to pay. That said, most of those have gone unsold for a long time. But good luck.

Four of the three medal sets sold for $455, $460, on eBay (two in August Gold at $1601/oz), and two at $599 and $600 in September when gold was $1760/oz). Three-coin set value at current Gold/Silver= $460 with Gold at $1,774.50/oz)

Two seven-coin sets were unsold at $1,125 and 1,250. My $895 price is still below spot for the two gold and two silver coins.

Make an offer.
