There are 85 issues in all covering the years from 1956 to 2006. The excellent coverage includes articles and photos of: Mercury - Gemini - Apollo - Skylab - Apollo-Soyuz - Space Shuttle - Hubble Space Telescope - Voyager - Viking - Galileo - The Solar System - The Universe - The Bicentennials of the US and the Statue of Liberty.

Some of the older issues are worn. That's why 15 years ago I purchased the sleeves which hold five issues each. The entire collection is now protected and I'll include the 7 empty sleeves for your future collection.

I'd like $275.00 (that's just over $3.00 an issue). I'm not willing to break up the lot. I've created a word document of the inventory that I will email to any interested buyers.

Buyers pay postage but remember these will be heavy and expensive to mail. The package(s) must be sent with a tracking number so both you and I can be sure they get to where they are going. I've enjoyed them for many years and I'd like you to do the same.

Before I update the listing, I'd like some advice from other collectors. Some questions:

1. Were people put off by the price?
   
2. Are these readily available?
   
3. Is the concern, the shipping cost due to the weight?

Price is probably an issue here. I'm not quite sure that those magazine are worth anything... since there are probably thousands of copies available, $3/copy is a lot.

For $3, I got 12 issues -- complete yearly sets from mid-1960s onwards -- from a local church. I've kept the issues I wanted.

And as you rightly pointed out, those magazines are really heavy and thus postage will be an issue. I could sell a few items but in view of postal rates, there's no point (and the falling dollar doesn't help, at least from the seller's point of view).

The other thing to consider is the fact that you want to sell the magazines in one lot, which I can easily understand why and I would do the same, but you might want to reconsider that and break down your lot by topic: maybe you can have an all-Apollo lot for example etc. This may be a more attractive way to go.

So I would answer "yes" to the three questions you've asked.

I think weight would be a huge issue, domestically and especially overseas. Personally, I think $3 is cheap, especially for some of the issues with significant content either in terms of pages and / or achievement milestones.

As for availability, I think the question here would be more related to the state of the magazines .... mint condition copies of NGs back to the 50s and 60s (at least down here) aren't exactly common.

You've not mentioned it but another factor would be the inclusion of article related maps .... and I can think of at least four important releases over the years.

You also asked for my input in that email, but since you opened it up here, I will answer here so it is more fully shared....not that I have any spectacular insight into your questions....just that we all share so much here....

Even the 1960's issues are relatively available around here. Some sale sites don't even "do" magazines anymore....people just would not buy them. One of my favorite sale libraries used to make me take their Geo's for 1-cent each....so I could buy a whole year for 12-cents ! Sheesh !

The 1950's issues are tougher to be sure.

With the rise of homeschooling, alot of issues you find now have been hacked up for pictures. So you get remnants. YEECK !

The $ 3 price is NOT out of line in my mind, if you have a steady, good-income job and more money than time to look for your own issues....that is a way alot of people will buy stuff.....pay the price no matter what !

I think the "lot" offering is GREAT for someone that has few or none of the issues. But I imagine that most of us who want them, will have most of the space Geo's.....what we will lack are the free standing "maps" or poster inserts....those are almost never in any issues I see and I see alot of Geo's.

While you might not get your lot sold here, you might have a few local book resellers in your area....who might pay at least half of your initial price.....

I am afraid that I have not really added to your knowledge on any of these point !

I have inventoried my LIFE Magazines and a list is available just email me. There are 35 issues from 1961 to 1971. Plus two issues, one in 1994 about the STS-61 HST repair mission and one in 1998 about John Glenn's return to space.

Taking into account of your input I will adjust the offer for the lot of 120 magazines to $240.00 - just $2.00 an issue.
I'd love to break up the sets into topics but honestly I don't want to spend the time, or break up the set. Buyer still pays postage.

This is really an excellent offer for someone who may not have these issues. Hopefully that person will visit cS and see this thread.
