Apollo 15 command module pilot Al Worden visited the United Arab Emirates for the first time last week to advocate for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) as "the fundamental tools of the trade" for future exploration on Earth and in space.
During a tour led by Kallman Worldwide, and sponsored by The Boeing Company, General Atomics Aeronautical and Lockheed Martin, Worden visited high schools in Abu Dhabi and Dubai and participated in the UAE University (Al Ain) Mars Symposium before appearing at the Dubai Airshow.
It was at the airshow that Worden made a special presentation — he gifted Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, with an Apollo 15 Robbins medallion containing metal flown to the moon in 1971. The Sheikh was so moved by the gift, that he removed a diamond and gold broach from his person and presented it in kind.
