Yuri's Night release
Yuri's Night Celebrates the 57th Anniversary of First Human Spaceflight and 50th Anniversary of Apollo 8 Mission That Took the Iconic "Earthrise" Photo

"Wow is that pretty!" Bill Anders exclaimed when he saw our blue marble of a planet appear during the 4th moon orbit of Apollo 8 50 years ago. This surprised reaction by an American astronaut was not very different from what the first human space explorer, Yuri Gagarin, said 7 years earlier when he orbited the Earth. He noted, "Orbiting Earth in the spaceship, I saw how beautiful our planet is. People, let us preserve and increase this beauty, not destroy it!"

17 years ago, "Yuri's Night" was started as a celebration of humanity's past, present, and future in space and as a celebration of the beautiful planet humanity shares. During that time, people of many different cultures, languages, and backgrounds have hosted thousands of Yuri's Night parties in over 90 countries on every continent on the planet.

This year, over 125 parties are being held from Manly, Australia to Lomé, Togo and from Gagarin, Russia to Los Angeles, USA. The Yuri's Night team is extremely excited to host multiple events in 2018 underneath NASA Space Shuttle Endeavour on the west coast at the California Space Center on April 7 and Space Shuttle Atlantis on the east coast at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Center on April 13. Both events will be featuring NASA Astronaut Nicole Stott, known as the Astronaut Artist, who will share her experiences from two spaceflight missions, working in space aboard the International Space Station for a total of 104 days.

At the flagship Los Angeles event, which will host more than 1000 people at the Samuel Oschin Space Shuttle Endeavour Pavilion, the 2017 Spirit of Yuri's Night Award will be presented by the board. The award is given each year to a person or persons that embody the Yuri's Night mission of using space and art to contribute to the future of humanity, both in space and on Earth. In the past, the award has gone to Astronaut Chris Hadfield, Bill Nye, and Dr. Alan Stern. The award itself is unique, as it is constructed of low-density superinsulating space age Aerogel material by Aerogel Technologies specifically for Yuri's Night.

Other notable events in the United States include:

  • 2001: A Space Party at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. that will feature the opening of their 2001: A Space Odyssey "Barmecide Feast" art installation

  • Yuri's Night at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, WA

  • Space Foundation Yuri's Night event in Colorado Springs, CO.
A number of science museums like the Great Lakes Science Center (Cleveland, OH), the Science Museum of Minnesota (St. Paul, MN), the Alabama Museum of Natural History (Tuscaloosa, AL), and the California Academy of Sciences (San Francisco, CA) all plan to host large events as well.

Around the world, major celebrations will be taking place at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa, Canada, the Odysseum in Cologne, Germany, the Space Expo in Nadarzyn, Poland, and the Philharmonic "Triumph" in Perm, Russia.

In Dublin, Ireland, Inspire Space is hosting a Yuri's Night Space Masquerade Ball on Thursday, April 12 at the Russell Court Hotel with prizes for the best-dressed individuals. They intend for any profits from the event to go towards paying the expenses for Irish students to go to the International Space University in France.

At the Manguzi Provincial Hospital in remote Manguzi, South Africa, volunteers from the Department of Health and the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) will be flying in on April 5 to show Hubble Space Telescope images to children in the pediatric ward for Yuri's Night so that the children can stargaze from their hospital beds.

The Nepal Astronomical Society (NASO), who have hosted many Yuri's Night events in the past, is this year seeking to host an event in every province with events planned in Janakpur, Bhairahawa, Pokhara, Itahari, and Kathmandu over the coming week. These events will each cover different aspects of how space exploration impacts our society, weather forecasting, artificial intelligence, and the search for habitable planets.

With so many events being held, it is likely that Yuri's Night is being celebrated at a science center, planetarium, or university near most people around the world. The easiest way for individuals to learn about parties or events near them is by visiting this website.
