I never thought I would ever get the chance to meet an Apollo astronaut. However, my son and I have met two in one month; something that will never likely happen in our lives again!Today, we had the pleasure of listening to the Apollo 13 presentation given by Fred Haise at the Infinity Science Center just past the Louisiana/Mississippi state line in Pearlington, MS. From what I have seen in sightings, this is one of a host of events honoring the 45th anniversary of Apollo 13 attended by him. This event was well-attended, with a number of schools, church groups, Boy Scout troops, and regular joes like us there. Bad weather in the area today did not seem to keep the people away. He gave a wonderful presentation about the Apollo 13 mission, followed by a question and answer session. Also on hand today giving talks and meeting with folks was John Crouch, who was a Fight Mechanics Specialist during the Apollo Program, and Patrick Whipps, the current NASA Manager of the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans. Of course, we toured the museum and took the bus tour to see the engine test stands. All in all, a great day for my son, myself, and my father! Oh, and I was pleased to hear that this may become an annual event at Infinity, so keep a look-out for it next year! Mr. Haise answered many questions from kids and adults alike. My son, Brian, Jr. meeting his second Apollo astronaut this month (and ever!). | |
