Space Exploration from Mercury to the Space Shuttle
Gen. Thomas P Stafford, USAF (Ret.) and Senator John H. GlennThursday, June 6, 2013; 8:00 pm

National Air and Space Museum Former NASA astronaut Gen. Thomas P. Stafford flew twice during Project Gemini and commanded both Apollo 10 and the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. Sen. John Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth in the Mercury-6 project and returned to space aboard Space Shuttle Discovery in 1998. Join these legendary figures in space history as they reflect on their distinguished careers with Museum director Gen. John R. “Jack” Dailey. The speaker will not be signing autographs at the lecture. The lecture will take place in the IMAX Theater and will be simulcast to overflow seating in the museum. The Director of the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum and John Glenn and will visit each overflow area prior to the lecture for a brief welcome to the overflow guests. Requests for tickets will be taken by web request from 10:00 AM Monday, March 26 – Friday, May 4, 2012. |

I have enjoyed many aviation/aerospace lectures at the National Air and Space Museum.You will also get a chance to meet some of your collectSPACE friends prior to the lecture. I usually call out, "Are there any collectSPACE members here?" If you haven't attended a National Air and Space Museum lecture, this would be a great one to start with. |

I will be attending the John Glenn lecture at the National Air and Space Museum. There was a lottery and originally I was placed in the overflow seating. Yesterday I received an email that I had been "upgraded" to the main hall. Any other collectSPACE people coming? |

Between a friend and myself we have two extra auditorium tickets. We both entered the drawing and requested one ticket, for each other, and both won the drawing. Send email if you (or anyone else) is interested in a ticket. I'll check my email tonight. We've also alerted another forum so there's a slim possibility they've been spoken for, but we'll respond either way. If nobody responds, we'll just turn them in, before the seating begins, so that they can go to any people who are waiting. |

Although I am not attending this lecture, I have been know to hold up a sign with either "cS" or "collectSPACE" and been able to connect with fellow csers.Why don't you do this in the National Air and Space Museum lobby before the Glenn lecture? Have fun, enjoy meeting new friends. |

As it turns out, I won't be able to attend the event tonight. We put in an offer on a house, and hopefully tonight I'll be spending a couple of hours initialing a whole lot of forms.In the past I've been able to write to the National Air and Space Musuem to change the name the ticket is being held for, and if someone writes me in the next couple of hours to tell me that you can definitely make it, I'll try that for you and then let you know if I got a positive reply. Otherwise at 2:00 EST I'll just tell them that anyone in overflow can have it. — Steve |

Guess tonight's event will be the 10th annual Glenn Lecture. I remember the first in 2004 when Annie shared the stage and they both spoke of their lives together. I was glad my high school aged daughter was there to hear it. |

I had a great time last night at the National Air and Space Museum's lecture featuring John Glenn and Tom Stafford. Stafford gave an illustrated talk about his role in the space program and Air Force from 1962 to the present. He was in some ways the "Forrest Gump" of the period, taking part in all the major events and programs. Stafford leavened his history with some funny stories (including Deke Slayton discussing what to do with Gene Cernan's body in case the GT-9 EVA did not work). John Glenn made additional comments and looks great at 91. Annie Glenn was in the audience, as well as astronaut Tom Jones. I enjoyed seeing fellow space enthusiasts Marv Rubenstein, Jeff Qualls, Tom and Mark Usiak (who took these pictures of the event).

It is amazing how sharp these guys are at their advanced age. Stafford always amazes me. Have not had the opportunity to meet Glenn. Must be that radiation they sucked in. |

Many thanks to Woody for giving me the tickets to the IMAX Theater! Also, thanks to Chris Calle for making them available to Woody. - For those that missed the lecture, the NASM website has a link to view the archived recording.
- By the way, my favorite Fleetwood FDC cachets were Chris' artwork! (Civil War, WWII, From the Earth to the Moon.)
