This program at the National Air and Space Musuem's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center will commemorate and reflect on the challenges of human spaceflight, and consider possibilities for the future with the International Space Station and travel to other bodies in the solar system.

Panelists:

  • Dr. Steven J. Dick, astronomer, author and historian of science
  • Alan Ladwig, Deputy Associate Administrator for NASA Public Outreach
  • Ken Mattingly, astronaut, Apollo 16, STS-4 and STS-51-C
  • June Scobee Rogers, widow of Richard "Dick" Scobee, STS-41-C, STS-51-L
Tickets are free if you are a member of the Air and Space Society, which starts at $35 and comes with a subscription to Air and Space magazine. If space events (and collecting) is your primary hobby and you want to splurge, $250 will get you to "Mercury 7" level membership and you can come to a banquet before the talk. These dinners are usually held above the restoration gallery — a nice venue.

From the Signing experience: Thomas Mattingly thread:

That second guy might have been myself.

A friend (Tom) and I exchanged cameras so we could get a shot of ourselves with the Admiral after eating. While we were waiting, a woman asked whether or not I would be expecting to have something signed. There would be no signatures granted. I replied no, I had plenty already, was only interested in a photograph, and that my heavy bag carried only cameras.

While talking, we looked up and saw TK signing a book for that first guy. The woman looked back my way and said, "obviously, I'm not doing my job very well."

After the book was signed the guy continued talking while we patiently waited for a turn. Then NASM Director Jack Dailey stepped up and told TK that it was "time to sing for your supper." Before stepping off, TK paused and allowed Tom to snap my photo with him and, in the background, the space shuttle Discovery which he once commanded.

I started to ask if it would be alright to take one of the two Toms together, but my friend said never mind and stepped back. That may have allowed Jason the opportunity to step forward.

Buzz Aldrin was a hoot at the talk. Don't know if he intended to be funny, but the timing in his self-deprecating humor was excellent. When, during his brief talk, the MC began tugging on his arm to signal him to cease talking, Buzz turned to him and said, "I'm sorry, am I talking too fast?"

Also sat at the dinner table with stsmithva and his wife. He showed us the beautiful signed postal cover, an image of which is posted over at the thread linked above. I don't know if he had any opportunity to have it signed, but I doubt that he did.

All times are CT (US)
