Skylab Astronaut Edward G. Gibson at Something Astronomical
October 12th – 7.30pm – Sheffield City Centre – Venue TBA

Ed Gibson was selected as an astronaut in 1965 as part of the first group of scientist astronauts. He served as support crew for Apollo 12 before moving on to Skylab. Along with Gerry Carr and Bill Pogue, Gibson spent 84 days in Space, an American record held for 21 years!

Mr Gibson will be giving a lecture entitled "Human Space flight and leadership that made it possible." After the lecture there will be an autograph signing. One photo will be signed for free! With up to 3 additional autographs available at a supplement.

Plus, before the lecture, there will be a drinks reception/meet and greet (Tickets limited) and a photo shoot.

Ticket prices are as follows:

  • Lecture - £20
  • Under 16 - £5
  • Under 12 – Free

  • Photo Shoot - £10
  • Drinks Reception - £10
You will also be able to buy exclusive photos and video from the event for £5.

This is a rare chance to meet and listen to a Skylab and Apollo era astronaut in the U.K. Don't miss the opportunity!

I am running another Kickstarter fund-raising page. Some of you may remember, the last target was quite high, this is much more achievable and I urge everyone to support this event on there. There are some online only offers on there including — best seats and autograph queue jumping. The more we raise on the Kickstarter, the more likely this event can go ahead.

If you are not using the Kickstarter page, then please email me with your ticket requirements as soon as possible and I will give you my address and we use the cheque and stamped addressed envelope method.

This event and Mr Gibson's appearance are entirely subject to ticket sales. The event cannot go ahead without all of your support. I'll remind that this a very rare opportunity, please support it if you can.

I should also say that within the coming weeks, I will become a father for the first time, so if there is a period of time where no one hears from me, this is the reason. But it will only be a temporary pause in communication.

I'll be happy to answer questions you might have, email me at nigelmcenaney@hotmail.co.uk.

Just a word of reassurance - Don't judge this event on the Kickstarter page, there is lots of interest and it looks promising.

Please get in touch for ticket info. Thanks.

But if you can support it on line - please do.

C'mon you guys. Lets see some support for Nigel. If the lecture is £10 cheaper than those at Pontefract, then surely it can't be so hard to stump up a £10 pledge.

Well, I don't know what happened but in the past two days, I've sold more tickets than in the past two weeks.

Let's keep it going! Thank you to all.

All the best Nigel. I hope to attend but due to another commitment may struggle?

A deadline for sales is good but just one question, does it have to be just 11 days left for an event not due until October?

The 11 day deadline is just the Kickstarter rules, if that fails I will restart it for another 30 days. If nothing by then, I will accept that it might not work.

However, the Kickstarter page is just one part of it, the ticket sales are going well and local sponsors are coming along nicely.

Don't forget, Worden has been to the moon and Gibson hasn't! Nothing sounds definite here? How many tickets have been sold? How many need to be sold to make it work? I need to know if it is definite?

I imagine it will only be definite if people stump up the cash and buy a ticket.

I can't think of any event like this that is ever definite. My fundraising I think is just a little more visible than others. Whether that's a good thing or not I can't decide.

I don't think Ed Gibson not traveling to the moon has much to do with it, he was still one of an extremely small group of people who were involved in the moon landings as well as spending 84 days in Space as a Skylab astronaut. Like the Apollo astronauts, they aren't getting any younger either.

I am not asking for money right now, so if people want tickets and for some reason the event didn't go ahead, they is absolutely NO risk to you guys. Only to me.

Hope everyone will understand, I just really enjoy events like Ken's and Aileen's and I would love to see more of them.

Please email me to reserve tickets.

Nigel, I am not being negative, I want to meet as many of these people as possible and I will come to this event if I can but will hold back until I know it is definite because I have to fit it in with other commitments which I would gladly re-arrange given enough notice!

Publicity is vital. Do you have a Facebook page or Twitter account where you can advertise your event? I hope to attend but lots on at the moment.

My other thought is that Ken Willoughby also holds astronaut events around this time of year if possible. Whether that would help you or not, I don't know? I wonder if Space Lectures (Ken) would be happy to co-host your event?

Ken's events are, and as far as I know, will remain independent.

As such there may well be two events on at or about the same time.

As a well-intentioned suggestion, it might be a good idea to try to coordinate the scheduling, to avoid a clash of dates. The events are still independent, but as far as I see, your audiences are probably the same people who would likely want to attend both events - it's a difficult decision if you have to choose!

Just to let everyone know the event is not gone just because the Kickstarter has ended. I am still waiting on two sources of fundraising. If both those fail, then I will have to postpone.

Please keep telling everyone and get some more tickets sold.

It is a real shame and I have put a great deal of effort in to this event but it is going to have to be postponed.

I will not give up and will get an event going as soon as I can.

If we can support events in Pontefract, why not Sheffield?

It could have something to do with the guest? Pontefract gets Apollo astronauts who are always the biggest draw.

All times are CT (US)
