The Adler Planetarium is hosting an Apollo 17 40th Anniversary Celebration on Nov. 13. Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt are scheduled to attend and participate in a panel discussion. It appears as if the event is invitation only, because the invite I received states "This invitation is non-transferable." The planetarium is rededicating its 3D Universe Theater after renovations as the Johnson Family Star Theater. The event includes a cocktail reception, the panel discussion with Cernan, Schmitt and others, followed by dinner. |

The Apollo 17 celebration at the Adler Planetarium was a very nice affair. Apollo astronauts Jim Lovell (who is a trustee of the planetarium), Gene Cernan, and Harrison "Jack" Schmitt were there. There was a reception, panel discussion and dinner. I had never met Schmitt before and found him to be very friendly and outgoing. He readily agreed to take pictures with attendees (including myself). I did ask him about doing a future autograph signing with Novaspace or ASF. He replied "maybe," and mentioned how heavy his schedule has been. He also confirmed that ASF knew in September that he was not coming to its event held last weekend. Schmitt will also appear at a book signing and member's night tomorrow. |

I enjoyed meeting David at the Adler. I've corresponded with space author and mimic Bill Mellburg but this was the first time I met him. He's a delightful man with great stories (David also has wonderful tales). |

Videos have been posted of the panel discussion: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 I'm leaning over and talking to Bill Mellberg at 1:07 into the first video (you can only see my plaid sports coat). |

I must say that Adler Planetarium was a wonderful place. I had a great time there. My brother brought my 6 year old nephew and he didnt complain at all about being there from 10am til almost 8 at night after a 3 hour drive there. I bought a year membership there so I could see Schmitts lecture and I plan on bringing my kids there. Great place! |
