It looks like I will be attending the public memorial service at the National Cathedral next week. I was wondering if any other collectSPACE members will be there? I will be driving in from the Gaithersburg area if anyone wanted to car pool. Perhaps there might be a chance to meet and go for lunch afterwards? — Martin |

I hope to be attending though I have not received a ticket yet, only an email. I probably will take a cab from the hotel since the cathedral is a bit too much of a walk for me from Metro but maybe I could get a ride from you after. We'll see how it goes. |

I just received an email saying that they were sending me two tickets. I had only asked for one, so this might be in error, however if there is anyone in the DC area who wants to use my second ticket, please let me know. |

It would be nice to meet you there. I'm not sure whether to drive or take public transport. One one hand there's rush hour and the need to drive, park, take the metro, then a bus, vs drive thru rush hour and find a parking spot. Either way, I would be happy to try and meet up, although given the vaguaries of transportation it might be best to contact each other by cell phone/text when we get there. Same deal here where the email said I would get 2 passes. Until I have them in hand though I will hold off on offering the extra one to anyone. I am just hoping they arrive in the snail mail tomorrow because I am leaving for DC after work Wednesday and if the mail is late that day I might not get what they send me. Not sure what happens then.You think they will allow cameras? If you'd like to email me the address is in my profile. Thanks. |

Allowed or not, keep in mind, this is a memorial service inside a cathedral. NASA will have a photographer there, and the video of the service will be archived. There will be media there as well, but I think the atmosphere should and will be a solemn one. |

I am not so sure Robert that this will be a solemn affair. It is a memorial service, not a funeral. That said, they will announce any limitations on cameras, which of course will be respected. Personally I was not expecting to take photos of the event per se but there may be an opportunity to catch a photo or two afterwards. In any case, the Cathedral itself is highly photogenic, and they do allow photos inside under normal circumstances. Check out my photos of it here, including the "Space Window." |

Okay, the Cathedral sent me an email tonight. No photography of the event, however photography is permitted before and afterwards as usual. |

The memorial will be broadcast live on NASA TV and streamed on the Cathedral's website.You need to sign up to receive the Cathedral's feed. Both Michael Collins and Gene Cernan will be speaking as part of the ceremony. |

At the Neil Armstrong Memorial, seated underneath the "Moon Window" with the moon rock brought back by Apollo 11. How fortunate!The mood is respectful, but not at all somber. Service to begin in a few minutes. |

That may well have been Adm. Mattingly...I saw him from the side at a distance. Given where he was seated, he might have been better seen on the TV coverage near Glenn and Aldrin.I was surprised how many shuttle flyers were there.

I wonder if it is possible to get of copy of the Memorial Service booklet? It's sad there's hardly any press coverage on event in the Netherlands...

Go to the National Cathedral in Washington website. Click on the Neil Armstrong memorial on the front page and open the free PDF file. It's a copy of the service program, including notes and hymns. |

A copy of the program is currently on eBay, with a bid of $45 and change (item 290775190562). Geez, I should print out the PDF and make my own copies, maybe jazz it up a bit....  |
