Elbow have lined-up a very special show this summer at the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire. The band will lead an evening of outdoor music and impromptu stargazing when they perform live in the shadow of the Lovell Space Telescope on Saturday 23rd June. Live from Jodrell Bank are a series of shows taking place on weekends throughout the year on an outdoor stage right in the shadow of the towering Lovell telescope. This diverse array of shows or transmissions will span all genres of music with some of the best international and nationally renowned artists. As well as providing an amazing backdrop the telescope will also be serving a secondary purpose as the worlds most incredible projection screen!Throughout the day there will be experiments and workshops along with free access to the new visitor centre – but come evening it’s all about the music and one mind-blowing and totally unique show! |

Made it to the show, even though it was touch and go with the lovely British summer we're having. Most of the Jodrell Bank complex was open to the public from 14:00 with an excellent Science Area showing University of Manchester participation into the VLA and other scientific developments such as graphene (yeah, new to me too!). The band came on at 21:35 with Guy Garvey declaring from off-stage: "Control, please align the Telescope", at which point the giant telescope oriented itself towards the audience..or "Jodrellites" as he called us!The dish of the telescope was used to screen live shots of the stage, plus intermittently, the Moon and a giant radar scope as seen below. The band even dedicated one number to Jocelyn Bell Burnell, who first discovered radio pulsars. "Build a Rocket, boys" went down well with the audience. Overall this was an excellent event that hopefully made money for the University. kindled interest in astronomy and raised the profile of the often unsung (pun intended!) achievements of British astronomical research.   | |
