I see that the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation's website now has a date posted for their Apollo 16 anniversary celebration honoring Charlie Duke, John Young, and Ken Mattingly. Do people here think this celebration will be of the same magnitude as the recent anniversaries? My son and I have always wanted to attend one of these, but we certainly cannot afford an Apollo anniversary banquet and Spacefest IV within weeks of each other. Any guesses as to whether Mattingly and Young will participate? |

Charlie Duke, Ken Mattingly, and John Young have all attended ASF/AHOF events in the past. |

My son really wants to attend this event, and it's five days after his 16th birthday, so he will probably get tickets for a birthday present... Lord willing and the creek don't rise... |

At all past mission-anniversary events which I've attended (14/15), a 'no autographs please' policy has been in place.

I like the 'No Autographs' rule at these events. Seems to make it that much more casual, that and the small number make the vibe loose, and, at least to me, it seemed to make for everyone being more relaxed, more open.At the Apollo 13 ,14, and 15 events astronauts would take a picture with you. The ASF also has a master photographer, Karl, who takes table photos and can often get a great snap of you with an astronaut. And being in the Saturn V room with that many people is like having the place to yourself. |

Agree with Mike. These are classy events, and to have people running around trying to get autographs would really seem crass. The ASF people really know what they are doing - and it's a very good cause. |

These are not for autographs, for several very good reasons, one being perhaps, for some astronauts, that's one reason why they attend these 40th anniversary events. My fancy way of saying: Maybe that's one of the reasons why Neil has attended in the past. |

We are in the same boat. We have to choose between this 40th anniversary event and Spacefest IV; we simply cannot afford both. If we had never been to a Spacefest, Spacefest IV would win out — multi-day as opposed to one night, lots of chances to have meals with and interact, lots going on with the talks, art, tours, etc. Spacefest is a blast. The anniversary event is a different kind of event, and the anniversaries have in the past attracted astronauts and other NASA luminaries who don't participate in the commercial shows. So we're torn. If we knew for sure that Young and/or Mattingly were going to participate, we would do the anniversary event. We have 12 days to decide (we'll try to buy universal packages at Spacefest on the first day of sales if we decide on Spacefest IV)... all in all, I can say that this is a most wonderful dilemma to be having, and I don't think we can lose either way. |

It has been noted elsewhere that as the shuttle orbiters are being processed for shipment from KSC, one is being kept up in the VAB. Great news for anyone taking the new "Inside KSC" tour. Wonder what the odds are that there will still be one in there next April 14th? |

Probably not; the reason for an orbiter being parked in the VAB is because there are only two available orbiter processing facilities and three orbiters. As presently targeted, Discovery will be departing on April 12, so its plausible the other two will be parked inside the OPFs. |

Ticket application is now up on the ASF website. The announcement suggests that Mattingly and Young will not be at the event. The dinner will highlight LMP Charlie Duke and backup crew members Fred Haise and Ed Mitchell. Tickets are $1,000. |

You might want to use this link instead. I think the key phrase for this event is, "...and more Apollo Astronauts to be announced". Although, the line-up is already pretty darn stellar, with Bean, Cernan, Cunningham, Gordon, Lovell, Schweickart, and Stafford in addition to those listed in the post above. And, only 100 tickets will be made available — I am aware that over half of the tickets are already sold, and it is likely much more than half by now. Having attended these events before, I can vouch for the excellence of the event... and of the worthiness of the ASF cause. If you have the means, I highly recommend attending. You won't be disappointed.  |

I would have gone with or without Mattingly and Young, but my husband seems to think that spending in the neighborhood of $3500 dollars to fly down to Florida with the kid for a one-night affair would be "self-indulgent." As if that were a bad thing. Some people just don't get it. I've been pouting for a couple of days over this, but I think I'll get over it. When we were at the Cosmosphere to see Al Worden this fall, the staff hinted at some sort of "big" celebration of Apollo 16 in the spring. That was before Orwoll, left, though. But I am renewing our premier membership to the Cosmosphere anyway, hoping for some kind of consolation prize event. |

John's right - ASF puts on great events, and the ticket price is well worth it. And it goes to a great cause.I expect more astronauts to be announced later - that's the usual pattern. |

I bought a ticket and am really excited to attend this event! I am a little disappointed that Young and Mattingly may not be there, but it promises to be a great event. I am hoping that Armstrong will be there too. When I asked Nicole at ASF if there was a possibility, she said that he has not responded yet to their invitation so at least he has not declined yet! |

John Young in my mind is the biggest legend of all astronauts. To see him speak would be amazing and I'm considering making the trip. I hope Young and Mattingly make it. This will probably be the last Apollo gathering in which the whole of a crew will be there. I do hope not though!

I agree it would be great if Young and Mattingly can attend, but at this late date I am not optimistic. I'm sure the ASF folks have done and are doing everything they can to get the entire crew to attend. But I attended the A15 40th, and regardless of how many of the A16 crew attend (Charlie will be there) it will be a wonderful evening. |

For anyone planning to attend who thinks they might lack for things to ask Charlie Duke, here's a great conversation starter: A group called Transception Incorporated, self-described as an Austin, Texas based psychic R&D operation, sent a letter to NASA Administrator Charles Bolden that nominates the Apollo 16 crew for the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. But there are strings attached. [T]he medal is being recommended for astronauts John Young and Charles Duke allegedly coming upon an extraterrestrial "shipwreck" on the surface of the moon during their third lunar surface excursion on April 23, 1972. A prerequisite for the award is that the crew is "released from secrecy" about what they really saw on the moon. Since we now know that Young/Duke were the ones who actually discovered Transformers on the Moon, hopefully the Blu-Ray Director's Cut of the Transformers movie will correct this for the historical record. |

The 11-day mission featured three moonwalks, including a 17-mile lunar rover "road trip" to collect more than 200 pounds of moon rocks to return to Earth. Meet the astronauts of Apollo, learn of the challenges of journeying 250,000 miles from Earth and discover the treasures the moon holds as we mark the 40th anniversary of Apollo 16 on April 14, 2012.
