Celebrating 50 Years in Space

A multimedia exhibit celebrating "50 Years in Space" will be in the main gallery of the West Georgia Regional Library in Carrollton, GA from December 1 through December 31, 2007. The exhibit will feature items from the private collections of four Georgia space enthusiasts.

The opening reception will be at the Library on Sunday, December 2 at 2:00 pm.

University of West Georgia professor of physics Dr. Bob Powell will be the guest speaker. Dr. Powell will talk about the impact that Sputnik had on American culture.

Everyone is invited.

Jimmy Brown has shared the photos he took of the exhibit that he, Gilbert Huey, Rob Sumowski and Joel Katzowitz staged at the West Georgia Regional Library.

From these images, it becomes quickly apparent that you four should be commended for a professional and impressive display. A tip of the space helmet, guys!

I had the pleasure of attending this lecture and learned much about the unmanned aspect of NASA's first 50 years. If you live anywhere nearby, make sure you stop by and see this.

Great looking exhibit... now who gets the honor of covering up all those fastener marks on the walls after the pictures are taken down?

Two more photos for this thread - one showing a beautiful Apollo 17 piece of a Hengeveld painting offset by a signed (old) hammer; the other a wide shot during set up day of the big models in the center of the room. A great effort by Gilbert, Jimmy, Joel and others.

Thanks for posting this and the pics. That is enough to sell me on making the brief 4 hour drive to see this. I'll blog on it on Today in Space History after attending.

Gil, I really like your presentation... combining the hammer and an Ed Hengeveld painting... an amazing piece.

I am really proud that one of my paintings is included in this exhibition. It is beautifully framed with the hammer and makes a real nice presentation. Well done, Gilbert!

Thanks Noah and Ed. The Hengeveld painting and hammer presentation has drawn more positive comments than any other piece in the exhibit from my collection. It's one of my favorites also. I'll be glad to get it home.

Gilbert, Rob, Jimmy, Joel -- what a wonderful way to put your collections on display and leverage your passion in the hobby. I am blown away by the amount of work and effort that must have gone into this project. Fantastic. Congratulations!

And I agree - that hammer / Hengeveld display is eye popping. A beautiful display!

Due to popular demand the library has asked that the Space-50 exhibit be extended until the end of January 2008. So if anyone hasn't had a chance to visit, you have another month to do so.

Not sure if I should be embarrassed or proud, but my living room looks like that!

Thanks Russ. We're re-uniting and getting ready to rev up another space exhibit project. We're currently in discussions with several Atlanta area venues. We'll keep the group updated as things progress.

By the way, Russ you've just been drafted.

Wow, I'm very impressed with the exhibit! I would love to help... maybe some of my crew autographed shuttles? I would even play my shuttle inlaid guitar! Keep up the good work guys!
