July 21 the City of Mitchell, Indiana will honor the 50th anniversary of hometown hero Gus Grissom. To pay honor to Gus the committee has a few special events.

On Thursday, July 21 there will be a Launch Breakfast at Spring Mill State Park at the Inn. Cost is $25 per person... slated to be in attendance is Betty Grissom, Mark and Scott Grissom, Lowell and Norman Grissom (Gus's brothers), Charlie Walker (NASA Mission Specialist), and Ken Bowersox (HoF Astronaut).

Also at the breakfast there will be a panel of engineers discussing the LB7 flight. Later that evening author Ray Boomhower and Curt Newport will speak at the local high school free of charge.

On July 22 Charlie Walker and Ken Bowersox will speak at the Friday Focus luncheon at the Bedford, Indiana Girls Club, cost for that is $12 and tickets can be reserved at the Bedford Chamber of Commerce.

There is also a Space Ball, or gala, being held. Lt. Gov Becky Skillman is the keynote speaker. She, like Walker and Bowersox are from Bedford, Indiana. Cost for the Space Ball is $50 per person and will be held at the Inn at Spring Mill State Park located in Mitchell. Again, Walker and Bowersox are scheduled to be in attendance.

July 23 there will be a grand parade going downtown Main Street in Mitchell, Indiana. There will also be tours given by Gus's brothers at his boyhood home.

One more note to the above message... the committee has had coins made to commemorate this special event. We currently only have about 100 coins left and they are $7.00 each.

Call the Mitchell Mayor's office at 812-849-5161 to get yours. I will post a picture, or will have someone post pictures shortly.

All the coins have been sold. There is no talk about reordering them at this time.

I hope all my fellow Hoosiers are having a rip-roaring time "down south" this week and enjoying one another's company like never before.

I cannot believe that I have missed out on one of the "events of the year"... especially since it involves all of our beloved "Grissom's". Hardly a day goes by that we don't think about all of you... those still here and those who left us.

Godspeed!

I made the six hour drive from Michigan with my wife and two daughters yesterday. We just left the luncheon that featured Charlie Walker and Ken Bowersox.

I would estimate that about 350+ people were in attendance. The luncheon was featured in a room about the size of a small school cafeteria so space was tight. The food was catered in and was outstanding. Chicken and rice accompanied by potatoes, carrots, and beans.

The city of Bedford was having electrical problems in the heat so the AC and lights were out during half of the event. Needless to say it got rather hot and fast.

Lowell Grissom and Charlie Walker really gave it to our current leaders in Washington concerning the sorry state of today's US Space Program. Overall the talks were of a positive nature, but no one held back. Also in attendance were many engineers who worked on the Project Mercury capsule.

After the talks, all gentlemen were more than happy to talk, sign autographs and take pics. This was the first time my daughters met Charlie.

Next stop... the Space Ball at 6pm.

The organizers of the 50th anniversary celebration of the flight of Liberty Bell 7 did a splendid job. Many thanks.
