Astronaut Scholarship Foundation announcement
Apollo 14 40th Anniversary Soirée
Relive the triumph of Apollo 14's lunar landing by becoming one of an elite few to participate in an exclusive celebration of the mission's 40th Anniversary, on January 29, 2011, where it all began -- Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Florida.
This once-in-a-lifetime event is limited to only 50 tickets which will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Presented by the non-profit Astronaut Scholarship Foundation, Apollo 14 Lunar Module Pilot Edgar Mitchell alongside fellow Apollo astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Alan Bean, Gene Cernan (Apollo 14 Backup Commander), Walt Cunningham, James Lovell, Rusty Schweickart, Dave Scott, Tom Stafford, Al Worden and more will headline this extravagant affair.
As one of only 50 ticketholders, you'll rub elbows with these legends during a champagne social at the hotel, before raising your glass to the man of the night and remembering his crewmates, the late Alan Shepard and Stuart Roosa. Next, you'll be cleared to board KSC private transport for direct, round-trip travel from the hotel to Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex's award-winning Apollo Saturn V Center (ASVC) for an after-hours soirée.
Your small group will be greeted by one of only three mammoth Saturn V rockets which remain in the world, suspended overhead as you make your way through the ASVC. Among many Apollo treasures in the museum is the actual Apollo 14 Command Module Kitty Hawk, which carried the crew to the Moon and back. This spacecraft will become the backdrop for a rare photo-opportunity with you and Mitchell.
Throughout the evening, you'll be surrounded by relics of the Apollo program as you're wined and dined during an elegant reception followed by a sumptuous four-course meal, presented at intimate tables where you'll be seated with an Apollo astronaut. Dinner concludes with a lavish dessert spread, full of tempting sweets and specialty coffees mingled between the museum exhibits. The icing on the cake will be when you and the Apollo astronauts gather around Kitty Hawk to reminisce about the mission in a candid discussion.
This incredible occasion may only be for one night, but you'll hold onto your memories forever with an 8" x 10" print of your photo op, signed by Mitchell, a photo CD of the evening and a DVD of the Apollo astronaut discussion program.

I know the Apollo astronauts are not quite as young as they once were but that's the first time I've heard them described like this!

Not sure if you're joking? Anyway, in 2007 the UACC show ended with a dinner just like this one, seated below the Saturn V (the relic) and in between the astronauts and I can tell you it was the event of a lifetime! Wish I could be there this time again...

Cute but there's no guarantee each of these astronauts will be available for each of the next three. I'm pretty sure Alan Shepard's family will not be at the other three, or Stu Roosa's. Also having only 50 attendees creates a unique intimate environment as opposed to having 200 or 400 people attend.
Finally, the CM Kitty Hawk will be on site. That is a unique event and I'm not going to blow it off hoping I'll get another crack in the future.

I'm going, a Christmas present from my family. I will take many pictures and post.
Edgaar Mitchell was great at the ASF AAMS. We talked for a bit, and he really does come off as one of the most 'human' and 'philosophical' of the Moonwalkers, and I mean those as 100% compliments.
To go from no previous spaceflight to Prime crew LMP, and Al's amazing story, well this entire mission was as unusual and individual as each of the others.

Wow, I just read about Armstrong's attendance on the ASF site.
I don't want his autograph, it's available, right? But a photo with him, just to stand with him, would be one of the most insane things I could imagine. I can only hope...
I had no idea.

Yes, I'm in. Should be a memorable evening and looking forward to it. When I said 'good enough for me' I quite meant it. My tipping point message from ASF yesterday said only 10 slots left, but it seems there are still some tix available as of today.

I am going as well, and looking forward to the more intimate size of the gathering. ASF always puts on a top rate affair and I'm sure this will be true again. Also looking forward to seeing the cS'ers and catching up on what's happened since we last met two months ago.

I will be there.
As of yesterday afternoon there were only 4 tickets remaining. Planning to arrive on Friday -- might do the new museum outside the CCAFS gate, and I have not yet made it to the Space Walk of Fame Museum, so I may try to make it there as well.
By the way, Harvey's point earlier regarding this being a special event was well made. The Apollo 13 40th anniversary event was attended by around 400 people -- 50 for this event will make it a much more intimate affair. It is unknown at this point how many will be attending the 40th anniversaries for 15, 16, and 17.

You make a good case. Yes, the event will clearly have a uniquely Apollo 14 setting. Enjoy! And then tell us about it!

I wonder if there is any chance that Joe Engle, as the LMP on the backup crew, might also be in attendance? I know he is not (as of yet) on the attendee list.
Would be nice if Bruce McCandless could make it as well, since he was the EVA-1 and Launch CapCom. Gordon Fullerton (Good-Night and Wake-Up CapCom) would be another nice addition too, but I fear that his health may preclude him from attending.
Fortunately, Fred Haise (Landing and EVA-2 CapCom) will be there.

Neil and Dave stood apart awhile just enjoying talking to each other - it was pretty cool. With only 50 attendees, everyone was pretty laid back and didn't crowd Neil or the others. I followed behind Neil at the dessert buffet and he approved of the lemon squares (and they were great). I sat next to Rusty Schweickart at our dinner table and he graciously spoke at length to us about the Near Earth Object project he's been working on for the past 9 years. It was absolutely fascinating and we kept asking for more. He seemed to enjoy talking about it. I had a great time with all of the guys and it was well worth it.

It really was a fantastic event - one for the books. The relative intimacy of the evening made all the difference. Thanks to Nicole and all at ASF who put it together.
Also, to the two gentlemen my wife and I rode next to on the bus and had various conversations with: I lost your contact info, so shoot me an email, let's keep in touch. Aloha.

+1 on the quality of the event, the hat-tip to ASF, and a special thank you to the Guests of Honor who took time to participate in this wonderful evening.
Good conversations, great memories, and nice to meet some other cSers as well. I shared Harvey's table and likewise found Rusty Schweickert's NEO / B612 Foundation discussion to be quite intriguing. It'll make you keep a wary eye to the sky

In todays mail from the ASF:
8x10 of Edgar Mitchell and me in front of Kittyhawk, signed. Each who attended got the photo op.
CD of photos of the event by Karl Ronstrom. As a semi-pro photog myself I will say Karl is one amazing photographer.
DVD of the Apollo 14 program.
I know it's said again and again but the ASF really does an amazing job.
