Although it hasn't been officially announced yet by the museum, Buzz Aldrin has noted on his website that he will be part of the National Air and Space Museum's annual John H. Glenn Lecture on Sunday, July 19.Aldrin will also be taking part in a book signing that day for his new memoir. On July 16, the museum will open a new exhibit of Alan Bean's Apollo paintings, but that's a topic for another thread.

Are KSC and NASM planning any events where the Apollo 11 flight crew will be together? |

Only Buzz Aldrin's participation has been confirmed to date, as a result his listing the dates on his own website's calendar.Perhaps we'll learn of Mike Collins' plans after his attendance at Spacefest. In addition to the National Air and Space Museum's events (as noted earlier), Kennedy Space Center is planning a celebration on July 24, as is the USS Hornet Museum in California on July 25. |

I asked Neil Armstrong what NASA and NASM had planned for his 40th he replied, "I honestly don't know as no one has contacted me to let me know." This was in October when I was driving him to the Airport. |

Seems like the call from NASA to the crew would go something like, "So what would YOU like to do for the 40th anniversary?" |

I see that on July 20 at the NASM, Buzz Aldrin will be signing copies of his new book, "Magnificent Desolation," from 11:00 to 2:00. Al Bean will be signing his book, "Painting Apollo" from 2:00 to 4:00 in the Cassini/Saturn Gallery, and then will be moving to the gift shop to sign the DVD "Alan Bean Artist Astronaut" from 4:00 to 5:30.So, we know that both Buzz and Al will be in the building that day! Overheard at Spacefest...someone asked Mike Collins if there were going to be any Apollo 11 40th anniversary events. His reply: "Gosh, I sure hope not!" |

Buzzaldrin.com mentions that he will be appearing at a "Glenn Series - Apollo 11 event". I wonder if that means it is intended to be like the Apollo 8 event last year. Of course that would mean that Armstrong and Collins would need to consent to appear as well. It's possible to have the event with just Buzz, but maybe NASM is waiting to announce something until they know for sure who is going to be there (plus it's only March after all).

Checking the NASM calendar, it looks like Al Bean will be at the NASM for several days. His exhibit opens on July 16 and he has book signings scheduled July 16, 18, and 19, with DVD signings the last two days. |

I'm planning on going to NASM for the weekend of the 19th, regardless of what unfolds. I've been wanting to go back to Washington for a few years and with the chance to attend book signings by both Buzz and my favorite, Alan Bean, I decided to go for it. It will be pretty interesting to see what plans unfold in the next few months! |

An Apollo 11th reunion on the 40th or whenever is not like a Beatles reunion, I hope Neil, etc. realize that. |

Has there been a White House photo opp with the entire Apollo 11 crew every five years for a while now ('94, '99, '04)?I think I recall one on the 25th and also the 35th anniversaries. Not sure about the 30th in '99. |

Here is the crew with George W. Bush for the 35th anniversary. Maybe Robert can find all the photos from the years of reunions. It would make for a great picture gallery. |

Thought you might be interested in the Leeds Beer Festival and it's crop of beers with a 'Moon' theme to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first lunar landing. These include 'Giant Leap' with the photo of Buzz on the pump. I have yet to sample... Yorkshire Evening Post: Moon landing celebration for Leeds beer festival The anniversary 40 years ago of man's first moon landing is being celebrated at an unlikely setting today – Leeds Beer, Cider and Perry Festival which runs until Saturday. The festival, which is supported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, will have on draught more than 160 real ales – beer brewed using traditional methods and ingredients. Added to that will be more than 20 ciders, perries and bottled beers. And among them will be beers named to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing. Moonshine, Full Moon, Over the Moon Mild, Bark at the Moon, New Moon, Pale Moonlight, Thirsty Moon, Dark Side of the Moon and Moondance will all be on tap at the festival at Pudsey Civic Hall. |

When an alcoholic beverage company used that very same image of Buzz in an advertisement some years ago in the US, Aldrin, a recovering alcoholic, sued them and (as I understand it) won a large settlement. I hope the folks in Leeds obtained permission to use his image for their alcohol product, or they may well find themselves in the same position...

Newsday: Angelina Jolie film may scuttle Grumman's Bethpage plans Northrop Grumman Corp. officials would like to inspect Plant 5 in Bethpage, where the lunar landing modules that took astronauts to the moon 40 years ago was built by the old Grumman Corp., to see whether it could be used for an anniversary celebration in July of that historic event. But there's one problem: Angelina Jolie is at work in Plant 5. No, she's not building spacecraft. The actress and a crew are using the old Plant 5 to film "Salt," a spy flick. "We wanted to see if we could do anything with the old building" to help mark the anniversary of the moon landing July 20, 1969, Dianne Baumert-Moyik, a Northrop Grumman spokeswoman, said last week. "But we didn't want to interrupt the filming." ...the situation has created something of a quandary for Northrop Grumman, the Los Angeles-based aerospace and defense company that maintains a major facility in Bethpage. The company no longer owns Plant 5, having sold it to Nassau County, which in turn sold it to an East Setauket-based developer, who has named the building Lunar Module Park Llc. So the company can't exactly barge in. The article goes on to report that a spokeswoman for the film said Northrop Grumman had not contacted them about entering the plant. "This is the first we've heard of it," she said. "Have Northrop Grumman contact us." |

Today's Newsday reports that Northrop Grumman would like to have some type of event at the old Bethpage site to celebrate the 40th anniversary in July. If it is unavailable then they plan to have a celebration in conjunction with the Cradle of Aviation Museum nearby. (This is a great museum for aerospace buffs!) Wherever it is, I'll be there!

ScienceDude: Nixon Library to host restrospective of Apollo moon landings The Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace Foundation in Yorba Linda is sketching out plans to host a retrospective and celebration of the Apollo moon landings, historic events made posssible, in part, by thousands of aerospace workers across Orange County. The date and details of the retrospective have yet to be worked out. But Sandy Quinn, a spokesman for the Library, says the exhibit will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing, which occurred on July 20, 1969 when Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and future Laguna Beach resident Buzz Aldrin touched down in the moon's dry Sea of Tranquility. |

From the Air and Space Society web site: On the eve of the fortieth anniversary of Apollo 11's first human landing on the Moon, the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum welcomes the Apollo 11 crew, as well as Mission Control creator and former Johnson Space Center director Chris Kraft as the speakers for the Museum's 2009 John H. Glenn lecture in space history. Forty years ago, the United States sent the first human beings to land on the surface of the Moon. Apollo 11 was the culmination of years of research, engineering, and hard work by the crew as well as by thousands of people on the ground. Join these distinguished speakers as they each offer their own unique perspectives on flight in America. The speakers will not be signing autographs at the lecture. Tickets will be available through a drawing conducted through the Museum's website. Please check back for more information to be posted in May 2009. |

I think it's a little funny that the directions read: Requests for tickets will be taken by web request from 10:00 AM, Tuesday, May 26 -- midnight, Monday, June 1, 2009. Tickets for the Apollo 8 event last November were gone in 90 SECONDS. I'm guessing that anyone trying after 10:02 AM, Tuesday, May 26 is going to be disappointed. Or am I missing something? |

Oh for goodness' sake, I needed to read just one more line to see about the drawing. That's the kind of thing I scold my students for. Well, I think the drawing is a good idea. I was wondering what I was going to have the aforementioned students doing at 10:00 a.m. on a Tuesday so I could hit the refresh button 50 times until the instant the ticket request came online. This way is more fair. Requires more luck, but it's more fair. |
