Yuri's Night announcement:
Yuri's Night launches Space Raffle

The executive council for Yuri's Night, The World Space Party, is pleased to announce the launch of a new fund-raising campaign at SpaceRaffle.net, the world's first long term raffle campaign supporting a space cause.

Starting with a raffle of up to $500 in travel / accommodation funds to attend any Yuri's Night celebration, the Space Raffle plans to follow this with raffles of Zero Gravity flights of the same type of airplane traveling in parabolic flight patterns simulating weightlessness that NASA uses for microgravity experiments and the training of astronauts.

The long term goal is to support as many Yuri's Night parties around the world through these raffles as we can, and eventually to host the world's first Zero Gravity Football charity tournament with raffle winners in teams competing on behalf of their favorite space cause. Support Yuri's Night today by buying a ticket now!

How To Follow Yuri's Night 2009

So let's say you're in the unfortunate position of being hours away from the nearest Yuri's Night party, or yours has already come and gone - but you still want more. With 207 events in 46 countries officially registered, it's not likely that many more will be showing up.

So aside from throwing your own Yuri's Night get-together with a group of friends (something we heartily endorse, by the way), here are three ways to keep up with Yuri's Night from the comfort of your own home:

  1. Watch Yuri's Night on uStream

This is Yuri's Night's second year of cooperation with the video-streaming site uStream, known by many as the home of the Shiba Inu Puppycam Internet phenomenon. Parties from around the world broadcasted their events in real-time on the Internet last year, and are gearing up to do the same in 2009.

Videos won't be going on 24/7, but visit the uStream group and the event list to see when to tune in.

  2. Follow the latest updates on Twitter and Flickr

If you're on Twitter - and it's starting to seem like everyone is, nowadays - follow @YurisNight for the latest announcements and party updates, many of which are exclusive to the Twitter feed itself. There have been over 380 updates so far, and as the celebrations continue more are sure to follow.

Also make sure to check out the Yuri's Night Flickr group, where over 600 photos from current and past Yuri's Night events have been uploaded. Pictures from YN Goddard and YN Space Coast are up for 09, so check those out and make sure to add photos from your own local event!

  3. Join Yuri's Night on Second Life

For an event that's literally "out of this world", stop by the virtual Second Life. Extropia has signed up for another event this year, and there's bound to be several YN celebrations.

I went to the Yuri's Night celebration with the Mars Society and San Diego Space Society in Oceanside tonight and got a few good pictures.

Nice talk from Francis French and Scott Borden!

If you go to the Life Photo Archive and put in "Yuri Gagarin", there are lots of pictures from this day back 48 years ago.
