NASA Johnson Space Center release
NASA Night with the Houston Astros

Support the STS-126 crew as they throw out the first pitch when the Houston Astros take on the Cincinnati Reds. The game starts at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29.

A commemorative Astros baseball cap, affixed with an STS-126 crew patch, will be given out to the first 10,000 fans at the game. Astros players will also be sporting the official NASA 50th anniversary logo on their uniforms for that night only.

In addition, NASA Night will feature exhibits focusing on NASA's 50th anniversary and the Constellation Program and pre-game activities with Astros mascot Junction Jack and JSC's own mascot Cosmo.

As of right now, there has been no organized signing announced. Though I have no firsthand experience, I have watched during prior NASA nights as fans have stood near where the astronauts enter the field and have passed them items to be signed.

Hmmm... I have never been to an event like this. It is quite a drive for me but I have never met a whole space shuttle crew.

We should organize an event.

Well, as this event is a baseball game, most if not all the time you will see the astronauts, which in it of itself will be brief, will be when they are on the field throwing out the ceremonial first pitch(es) while you are in the stands.

So unless they specifically announce a meet and greet session before July 29, I would consider this event a chance to watch, rather than have direct interaction, with the crew and consider any opportunity for their autographs as an unexpected bonus.

As promoted before the game, the Houston Astros players added the NASA 50th Anniversary logo to their uniforms for Tuesday's game, which took place on the 50th anniversary of the National Aeronautics and Space Act being signed into law.

Before the game, the STS-126 crew — commander Chris Ferguson, pilot Eric Boe, mission specialists Heide Stefanyshyn-Piper, Stephen Bowen, Don Pettit, Shane Kimbrough and ISS flight engineer Sandy Magnus — joined Houston Astros pitcher Chris Sampson and team owner Drayton McLane for a press conference.

Taking to the field, the crew was introduced as United Space Alliance's President and CEO (and former astronaut) Dick Covey distributed the baseballs for the ceremonial first pitch.

3... 2... 1... throw!

STS-126 commander Chris Ferguson and pilot Eric Boe seemed please with their pitch.

McLane congratulated the crew after the pitch.

Sandy Magnus and Stephen Bowen chat with Junction Jack.

After their pitch, it was announced that the crew would sign for their fans outside Minute Maid Park's west entrance. Here Stephen Bowen, Shane Kimbrough and Eric Boe sign their NASA portraits.

I assume those hats will be on eBay soon!

I have two from previous NASA nights. As a lifetime Philadelphia Phillies fan, I get more abuse when I wear one. I hope to get them signed soon and then take them out of heavy rotation and into my trophy case.
