Queen Elizabeth II plans to stop by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center when she visits the United States in May to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the English settlement at Jamestown, Va.

U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) — arguably the Queen of Goddard — intends to be on hand May 8 when the Queen of England and her husband, Prince Philip, visit the Greenbelt, Md.-based NASA field center May 8 to tour the facility and make a phone call to the astronauts aboard the international space station.

Mikulski Welcomes Queen of England to Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt

Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.) welcomed today’s announcement that the Queen of England and the Duke of Edinburgh will visit NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., on Tuesday, May 8. Senator Mikulski will be in attendance for the visit, which will include a formal welcome and satellite phone call with astronauts at the International Space Station.

"I am so proud to welcome the Queen of England and the Duke of Edinburgh to Maryland’s world-class space facility, and to show Her Majesty and His Royal Highness the truly extraordinary contributions that Goddard makes to science, exploration and discovery," said Senator Mikulski. "When astronauts go out into space, they stand on the shoulders of Goddard. Goddard is the astronaut's communication lifeline, handling all communication between the shuttle and mission control. But they're not only important to the shuttle. The scientists, engineers and administrative staff at Goddard keep Maryland a leader in innovation by creating the building blocks that will carry us through the next decade and set the stage for the next century."

Queen Elizabeth II to Visit NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center

Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh will visit NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., on Tuesday, May 8. The tour of Goddard is occurring near the end of the queen's visit to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown settlement in Virginia.

Goddard is home to the largest organization of scientists and engineers in the United States dedicated to learning and sharing knowledge of the Earth, sun, solar system and universe. The visit gives the royal couple the opportunity to meet 21st century explorers of new worlds. The visit is indicative of the long history of collaboration with the United Kingdom, including the Hubble Space Telescope and Solar Dynamics Observatory.

"NASA is honored to be one of the U.S. organizations hosting a visit by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth," said NASA Administrator Michael Griffin. "The United States and the United Kingdom have a strong partnership in space, from British-born mission astronauts who serve in NASA's astronaut corps to the numerous joint scientific and research efforts under way."

This visit follows a signing on April 19 of a statement of intent between NASA and the British National Space Centre, London, that confirmed a mutual desire for discussions on specific areas of potential collaboration involving lunar science and exploration.

The visit to Goddard will include a presentation and reception with employees, a demonstration of the new Science on a Sphere visualization system, and a tree planting ceremony at the Goddard visitor center. The queen will have an opportunity to speak with the current crew aboard the International Space Station. The duke will tour facilities used to build and evaluate satellites and equipment being prepared for space flight.

Parts of the visit will be carried live on NASA TV or included in NASA video file feeds that day.

We colonists in Virginia are all atwitter at the first visit by the Queen of England to our shores since 1991. She is visiting to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Jamestown, but one of the three days she will spend in Washington, DC will include this:

8 May 2007: Washington
Morning: The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh visit the NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre.

The Queen meets staff and visits the Mission Control Centre.

The Duke of Edinburgh tours the spacecraft test facilities and robotics.

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh view the 'Science on a Sphere' exhibition and plant a tree at the Visitor Centre.
