Capt. Dwayne Ready with Houston Police is briefing media outside Johnson Space Center.Houston Police received a report of possible shots fired just after 2:00 p.m. CDT. They responded and met with NASA security, constables and the FBI. Their SWAT team is now on site and has taken control of inner-perimeter. The description of the suspect is a white male, 50-60 with one weapon — a handgun, though they do not know if it is a revolver or semi-automatic. It is confirmed, based on a witness report, that the suspect fired two shots. The only observation of the suspect is by another JSC employee. The police have not seen him. They do not know if he is alone nor can they confirm that all employees in Building 44 have been accounted for. There is no confirmation as to the suspect's identity. |

Two people are dead: a male hostage and the gunman, William A. Phillips, Jr. A second hostage, a female, escaped unharmed. In the process of negotiators attempting to establish contact with Mr. Phillips, police heard a gun shot and after entering the building to investigate, they found that he had shot himself once in the head. The male hostage is believed to have been a victim of the earlier two shots reported. According to NASA's employee directory, Mr. Phillips was employed by Engineering and Sciences Contract Group (ESCG). |

My sympathy to all involved. I guess the BIG question is: how do you get a gun past security into a NASA facility??Paul |

Phillips was an employee and as such he had proper identification to be on-site. While NASA security rules prohibit firearms to be brought on property, there are 15,000 employees who need to enter JSC, many multiple times a day, and then have access to over 100 entrance ways into the buildings on the premises. All pass through security gates where cars are subject to random searches. Key buildings to on-going space operations, such as Mission Control and the Neutral Buoyancy Facility, have metal detectors that all visitors must pass through. Building 44 was a support building, a group of offices, and not a high profile target. The logistics of trying to manage access for that many employees throughout all of JSC is a daunting thought. |

Johnson Space Center held a memorial this morning to honor senior avionics systems engineer David Beverly, who was killed in the shooting incident at the center on April 20. The memorial was held in Teague Auditorium for NASA employees and contractors. The event was not broadcast on public NASA TV, nor was it open to the public. According to KHOU TV in Houston, almost 700 people attended the service. The Houston Chronicle recently published a profile of Beverly: NASA engineer who was slain loved to tinker |

The gunman was given a poor job performance as part of a job evaluation by the person he shot. |
