Houston Police received a report of possible shots fired just after 2:00 p.m. CDT. They responded and met with NASA security, constables and the FBI.

Their SWAT team is now on site and has taken control of inner-perimeter.

The description of the suspect is a white male, 50-60 with one weapon — a handgun, though they do not know if it is a revolver or semi-automatic. It is confirmed, based on a witness report, that the suspect fired two shots.

A second hostage, a female, escaped unharmed.

In the process of negotiators attempting to establish contact with Mr. Phillips, police heard a gun shot and after entering the building to investigate, they found that he had shot himself once in the head.

The male hostage is believed to have been a victim of the earlier two shots reported.

All pass through security gates where cars are subject to random searches. Key buildings to on-going space operations, such as Mission Control and the Neutral Buoyancy Facility, have metal detectors that all visitors must pass through.

The memorial was held in Teague Auditorium for NASA employees and contractors. The event was not broadcast on public NASA TV, nor was it open to the public.

According to KHOU TV in Houston, almost 700 people attended the service.
