From The Columbus Dispatch:
quote:
Former senator and astronaut John Glenn and his wife, Annie, were slightly injured in a traffic accident near Easton Town Center last night.

The crash happened at 11:14 p.m. on Morse Road near the ramp to I-270, Columbus police said.

Medics took the Glenns to Grant Medical Center, after Mrs. Glenn, 86, reported back pain and Sen. Glenn, 85, complained of chest pains. Both were being evaluated in the emergency room and were "extremely stable," the nursing supervisor said early this morning.

Thanks for linking the story, Robert. Sounds like the Glenns were kept at the hospital overnight, probably not because of their (slight) injuries but because of their age.

An update from the Associated Press:

Glenn, 85, and his wife, Annie, 86, were in fair condition Saturday afternoon at Grant Medical Center, nursing supervisor Louis Tejada said. They were expected to be released Sunday after a few final tests, said Dale Butland, a friend of the couple who formerly worked for Glenn.

Glenn is a great American hero and we would love to see him around for a long time!

Update from the Associated Press:
quote:
Former senator and astronaut John Glenn and his wife, Annie, were discharged Sunday from a hospital where they had been recovering from what he called a "very serious" car accident.

"I do not recommend you go test your air bags the way we did the other night," Glenn said.

Neither Glenn nor his wife was seriously injured, said Dr. Paul Beery. Beery said the former senator suffered a minor fracture in his sternum.

I didn't click through to read the entire AP story, but did catch on a CNN news crawl that the estimable and much-loved Sen. Glenn was given a ticket for failure to yield. Can also tell you from experience that these old aviator-type drivers are, ahem, stubborn about their god-like driving abilities and prerogatives. I am SO glad that everyone is OK. Though a cracked sternum is supposed to be mighty painful.

Don't forget that getting a ticket is different from being convicted of a driving infraction.

I would like to think he is innocent until proven guilty or pleads in some way.

Either way, older people can drive safely and we don't have all the facts in this case.

Well, yes. Precisely my point.

If you're going to have a traffic accident, have one like Senator Glenn's, take responsibility, if it's yours, and suffer it to be reported promptly and transparently by Ohio newspapers.
