Bryan,
Lets hope some cs members will turn out for this event. I am sure all the adults and children are going to have a great time, its sounds very exciting-something for everyone.
I wish you all the best-Story is such a real nice guy-and his book and the DVD and the music CD are well worth having-best of luck, the telescope idea-this will suit Story- as he photographed some great pictures whilst in space. Think his favourite is the time he was on STS61-the 1st Hubble Repair.
Have a wonderful evening,
best to all from
Brenda.

I have heard him speak- he is very good. My 7 year old followed along with ease. Sounds like you have a great night planned.

Good luck!

Space Night 2006 with Astronaut Story Musgrave

On April 5, 2006, the Groton Lions Club hosted former astronaut Story Musgrave up at the GDRSD High School. It was a fun and exciting time had by all.

The day started off by picking Story up at the airport. It was easy to pick him out of the crowd getting off the plane. We traveled the back roads to Groton and heard some fun and interesting stories of Story’s childhood in MA. He loves the outdoors, rivers, pine trees and maple syrup making. I think he misses New England and its many different seasons and landscapes.

We had a nice Italian lunch were we learned about clearing your mind while in zero g. Did you know that some of the pictures of astronauts floating around sleeping were staged! Story enjoyed sleeping unrestrained but most astronauts do not. My whole family enjoyed their lunch with Story.

We then headed off for a tour of the MIT-HayStack Observatory. What a neat facility. See http://www.haystack.edu/. Story got to meet some scientist who were part of an experiment that he did on orbit aboard STS 51F. The facility is top notch and will be getting some major improvements over the next year or so.

We then headed over to the main event- Space night. Even though it was snowing, we had the MIT Haystack people setting up a radio telescope display, some local telescope makers showcasing telescopes and how they work, Boy Scouts selling pizza and juice, a silent auction with trips to Houston, KSC signed posters and photos plus other fun stuff. The main event for the kids was a Space Derby. Build a balsa wood rocket run by a rubber band propeller and run down a fifty foot line. They can move fast and the kids love to watch them travel…

Story then went on and gave an hour and half presentation that was first rate, inspirational and fun. We had some audio/video problems but it did not interfere with his story. He signed lots of photos ( Kennedy Space Center Visitor center ones- him in his brown flight suit) and lots of crew photos. The kids and adults all enjoyed his talk and his autograph. I was so busy doing lots of stuff that I was not able to help some people get autographs.

We then headed to a friends house for the night. Still lots more stories and opinions. The man has lots of views on many things. He is a unique individual and a true renaissance man. I would highly recommend hiring him to come and speak or if possible go hear him.

I might be having a second chance on some auction items that were not paid for or picked up. They are a Story Musgrave signed poster and some other signed items. Watch for details.

Bryan,
What a great day you and everyone there had! "He is a unique individual and a true renaissance man." You hit the nail on the head! Story is...well...Story!
Anyone who has never met and seen him speak should jump at the chance to do so. You will walk away in awe and greatly inspired!

Bryan,
Thanks very much for such an interesting post. Glad everyone enjoyed their evening, sounds as if your family like being with Story.
He has views on many different things,I think this is why Story is unique, and such a well loved person, Story- is Story.
As you say- he loves the outdoors, the rainforests and nature. We can certainly learn more from such a knowledgeable former
Astronaut.I am really looking forward to seeing him in May.06 at KSCVC-to see what tales he has to tell.
Best Wishes,
from Brenda.
