Fourty years ago, my hometown inaugurated a planetarium just in time to provide me with my first thrills in astronomy and astronautics. Their anniversary day, next April 1st, will be a encounter opportunity with CSA astronaut Julie Payette (STS-96).

Here's from the official communique:

THE MONTRÉAL PLANETARIUM IS TURNING 40 … AND PLANNING A BIG PARTY!

Montréal, March 28, 2006. To mark its 40th anniversary, on April 1, 2006, the Montréal Planetarium is inviting its “Montréal stars” of all ages to a celebratory weekend on April 1 and 2. The price of admission will be the same as back in 1966: 75¢ for adults and 25¢ for children! A very special guest will be joining us for the occasion, too: Canadian Space Agency astronaut Julie Payette will be giving a lecture and signing autographs on April 1.

A special line-up of public events is planned to mark this exceptional milestone: a new permanent exhibition, a new multimedia presentation, a science lecture series and workshops for young people. And along with this jam-packed weekend, the Planetarium will also be hosting a series of scientific lectures on various astronomy subjects all year long.

"I'm delighted that after 40 years, the Montréal Planetarium is still working to introduce young Montrealers to astronomy, by inviting them to explore questions that have fascinated humans since time immemorial. The Montréal Planetarium is known for the exceptional quality of its efforts to make science accessible to over six million visitors since it opened,” noted Francine Senécal, Vice-Chair of the City of Montréal Executive Committee responsible for sports and recreation, Montréal's Nature Museums and matters related to the Olympic Installations Board.

The Montréal Planetarium is Canada’s first public planetarium, and the only French-language planetarium in North America. Since it opened in 1966, this gift from the Dow Brewery to the city of Montréal has produced more than 300 multimedia shows, a huge range of theme exhibitions and fact sheets and exploration kits for students and teachers, and has organized hundred of stargazing events.

40TH ANNIVERSARY PROGRAM

A new permanent exhibition: 40 Years of Astronomy. The science of astronomy has made astounding progress in the past 40 years, in every field. Come relive some of the major discoveries of the past four decades, and see what was happening in Montréal and Quebec at the time.
