See www.kansas.com for an interesting article from Wichita Eagle on future of Cosmosphere and other peoples take on it. They are doing some really good things including education. I'm personally aware of some really outstanding alumni from their Space Camps who are in the Space Field already, or very close to concluding outstanding college careers and entering the field. The young lady Teresa Sindelar who runs the camps is such an example. When she was young, a chance meeeting with Tom Stafford resulted in an urging to go to Cosmosphere. The results were wonderful.
Also see some of Robert's and others comments in other listings. This is a problem, but with the outstanding collection and staff, the future is bright.
Having just taken some Scouts on a very very quick 1 hour, 15 minute tour last Saturday (can easily take 6-8 hours and not be complete), I can tell you it is working. There was a 7th grade girl along with the scouts that tells me she wants to go into Astronomy. When I had them in the White Room, and explained that Moon Walkers had stood there, she uttered "sweet". Similar exclamations upon seeing A13 Capsule, and the actual inner gloves Aldrin and Armstrong wore on the moon.
Max was a giant, and we can all be grateful for his and Patty Carey's contributions and vision.
The vison can, must, AND IS going forward!!!
